My photography trip with The Northern Light Company was my first-ever solo holiday, and I was really nervous, but it was honestly one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. From start to finish everything was incredibly well-organised, and Chris and Terry made me feel welcome and supported throughout.
Leading up to the trip, I had a million questions and sent a lot of emails to Chris, who was always quick to respond and incredibly helpful with my endless queries.
Given the region’s unpredictable weather, flexibility is key, and despite the heavier-than-expected snow, Chris and Terry were always ready with backup plans—every day, every night—ensuring we didn’t miss out on anything. Even though there was lots of cloud cover from the snow, we still managed to see the Northern Lights most nights. Chris and Terry worked tirelessly, using their maps and apps to track the clearest areas and make sure we had the best possible chance of seeing the lights in all their glory.
A couple of standout moments were the sea eagle trip and visiting the reindeer farm. The sea eagle excursion was unforgettable—seeing these majestic birds up close as they soared over the fjords was an absolute highlight, the reindeer farm was equally magical. On top of that we got to see Moose in the wild, some absolutely breathtaking places, beaches – and barely any other people – which was a dream!
One of my favourite parts of the trip was the chance to eat together as a group every evening. It was such a great way to unwind after a day of exploring, and I really enjoyed getting to know the other travellers. The group also had some meetings where we learnt about our cameras, camera techniques and reviewed the photos we’d taken. I loved these sessions, it was such a valuable part of the trip, and I came home feeling like I’d not only experienced something incredible but also grown as a photographer.
The accommodation was another highlight—comfortable and steadily improving as the trip went on. By the final hotel, I kept having to pinch myself because the view was just so breathtakingly beautiful.
Both Chris and Terry are incredibly knowledgeable, but they’re also loads of fun and brought plenty of banter to the trip. The group of other travellers were also wonderful, and it was easy to make new friends along the way.
If you're hesitating - don’t! This trip was hands-down one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. My family and friends are sick of hearing about it, I wouldn’t hesitate for a second to book another trip with The Northern...
Read moreJust came back from our Northern Lights Spring Equinox Trip with our fantastic guide and mentor Chris Percival. Small group with like minded people. Nothing was ever too much for Chris, always professional, amicable and happy to help. Chris is very knowledgeable about the areas we visited always ready to lend a hand and give tips on photography either during the day or whilst encountering the northern lights. We ventured out to hunt for the lights almost every night and we're taken to magical and remote locations where we we either completely alone with nature or with a couple of others. Chris has amazing knowledge and apps to know when and where the northern lights peak times will be, so arranged departure from our hotel accordingly. Thanks to his patience and experience we got to take some amazing pictures and Chris took quite a few of us too :-) If it got too cold we sat in the heated van with something warm to drink before going back out for some more of the green lady. The tour to the reindeer farm was very nice and informative we were able to feed them, hear about the Sami people and had a delicious lunch. The eagle safari (which I was sceptical about) was out of this world!!! The eagles came so close to the boat to catch the fish we threw. The tranquility of the water and the fjord was breathtaking. The lunch was d.e.l.i.c.i.o.u.s!! We wanted to see moose and Chris went out of his way to find safe spots to stop and see some by the side of the road. We were taken to Reine, Andøya, a northern point on the island and hamnoy (and many other places that I don't remember the names of). The routes chosen were so scenic and the small towns so picturesque that we hardly noticed time flying by. The hotels were comfortable with nice hot evening meals and tasty breakfasts. We are so glad we chose this tour and met some lovely people in our small group. Definitely recommend it! It's always difficult to know which tour to choose - this...
Read moreWhat a fantastic week we just had in Sortland with Chris.
Seeing the Northern Lights has been on my wish list for as long as I can remember and we were fortunate enough to see them on our first night, before we'd even checked into the hotel!
Chris was a brilliant guide to the area and a master at reading the local weather. If the Lights are up there, Chris will find you the right spot to see them.
All of the other activities were great too, especially the Andøya Space centre. None of the other Northern Lights trips we looked at went there and if you're into your astronomy and physics, it is a great day out.
Watching the White Tailed Eagles at Ringstad swooping down to pick up fish from the water was a unique experience and we got some great photos with Ian who ran the safari.
To be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect from the Reindeer experience, but spending time feeding them with the family who own them and learning about the Saami culture was a magical experience that I'll never forget.
The scenery in the area is stunning, especially the Lofoten Islands and the heavy snow cover made it even more special.
The hotel was excellent with a superb breakfast selection and a good menu in the evening. There was a slight misunderstanding which meant we had to make our own arrangements on the Sunday night. This was not a problem as it was a nice chance to sample another local restaurant, but Chris sorted out a refund within a day or two and the hotel added an extra 25% for the inconvenience, so there's nothing to complain about there!
In summary, I would have no hesitation in booking another trip with The Northern Lights Company and in recommending...
