I have no real hiking experience. I work a 9-6 desk job and have a sedentary lifestyle. I went hiking to Ryten in my regular sport shoes and t-shirt + legging on a sunny day. I have one bad knee(it has chondromalacea patella). Below is my experience.
The hike was strenuous at parts. I had to sit down few times during the uphill hike. Some rocks were scary for me, so I chose to crawl over them using both my hands and lift myself up than walk up with sturdy foot. Some areas need everyone to use their hands to grab on to rocks and move forward. There are chains in some areas to assist the rock climbing bits.
At some point I was thinking why am I doing this ha ha. But on the dot, in 2 hours we were at the top. Hike down took us longer, because the steep downhill walk was not made for my shoes and since it was super dry land(it hadn’t rained in 2 days I think) I felt I could slip easily over loose stones and rocks. So downhill hike was almost 2.5-3 hrs as we also stopped to take photos downhill. We parked at the Innerstad (peat museum) parking, paying for the parking was worth it. We could use the toilet before and after the hike and the toilet had gigantic rolls of tissue paper and soap that hadn’t run out(which is rare). We enjoyed a mini picnic on the bench after the hike by the parking site.
All in all, for a beginner this would be a moderate hike. Its definitely doable and it’s not something you should miss, if you have the will to keep on going. The view at the top is...

Extreme winds at the summit, not necessary for the best views since there is just the sea on the other side, do go take a look at the kvalvika beach though from just below summit. Downhike is just as if not more demanding since you have to watch your step and the steep rocky sections with chains are difficult.
Tip: if you continue towards the parking lot from the summit along the crest you can see another view to the next valley over Between kvalvika beach and the valley where...
Read moreSince you came all the way to Kvalvika beach, and you see the top of the mountain.. Ryten is a must. This is one of the best beach overlooking tops in Lofoten Islands. The hike is not easy, it takes around 60 minutes to go all the way up without stopping. It is steep. At the middle of the climb, there is a lake which cannot be seen from the beach. This lake could be drinkable fresh water but I am not curtain. The top offers amazing 360 view, as well as beyond words sunsets. This is a tourist route so a lot of people will be there with you. The best way for hiking this place is during summer months when sun is always around...
