At 1,084 metres above sea level, Kjerag is the highest peak in the Lysefjord. Here you can take a picture of the Kjeragbolten boulder and enjoy the view from the mountain plateau. Kjerag is also a popular attraction for base jumpers and mountain climbers. Kjerag is a seasonal hiking destination. Before the county road between Sirdal and Lysebotn opens around the middle of May, Kjerag is considered to be accessible only to guests with special equipment, accompanied by a tour guide. The snow is deep and skis or snowshoes are required. The season ends when the road closes for the season due to snow conditions in October/November. The hike to Kjerag is around 11 kilometres long and the round trip takes 6 to 10 hours. You need to be in good physical shape before heading out on this mountain hike which has an elevation gain of 800 metres. In some places, you have to pull yourself up and slide down with help of wire, so it is a demanding hike even for experienced hikers. The starting point is at the parking lot at Øygardstøl. Ask the staff in the parking lot about the current conditions – they will give you all the information you need. Be especially aware if it rains as the trail can get slippery. I went out of the season (November) so no chain available and a lot of ice (-3 Celsius), which made me detour from the path to walk on the grass since I had no crampons. Detouring can be dangerous because there is not a marked path but you have to follow red signs on the rocks and when you start to loose some of these to detour, it’s hard to find the way back, but you can still use compass or just walk towards the people you see around you. It took me 5.5 hours to reach the peak, eat, rest, picture and back. No way to take picture on the Kjerag rock (too icy and believe me...there is literally nothing underneath). I had some difficulties on the way back because the ice with strong slopes. I’ve been on the pulpit rock too and the view is much better there. Amazingly, there is no deaths recorded till date due to someone falling from the rock Kjeragbolten in Kjerag, Norway. Although, there were 9-10 people in all have died whilst base jumping on the same mountain, but none falling from the rock. I have seen that the rock is quite wider than it looks and a bit easy to walk out onto it. So don't worry to jump into an amazing moment,...
