Finally it happens today at 12.12.21 (magical number;-) I was there at the border and I also meet the Norwegian older adventurer with his Alaskan Dog who was really cuddling and so I was fully satisfied, after one week having rough weather and road condition to all my Nordic destinations here was one of the greatest experience. it was Sunday so no tourists and I had time enough for chat and exchange some Information and a lot of nice photos. It was great experience and tomorrow with a husky sled dog tour will be a perfect start for new week. enjoy every one Part 2 : hello my friend hope you are doing fine and not frozen yet;-)) tell Michael John is coming back for the trip I missed last time, so get the dogs ready,I meet you at the border when I arrive in Kirkenes about 23-26.03.2023;-))))

The border between Norway and Russia not far from Kirkenes is presently in the summer of 2023 according to the information we had received, the only one between Russia and wester Europe to be open for traffic. You cannot enter the border zone unless you are going to or coming from Russia. We did not really find it so interesting that you should take one of the many guided tours to visit the border zone.

The ending point of my roadtrip to hell from France. Everyday, Norwegian shoppers and Russian workers and relatives go across this border station. Nothing to see really (souvenir shop, border post can't be visited by tourists, toilets, sign), just the furthest point you can go in the Schengen area (if you exclude Grense Jakobselv).

Flew from Vancouver, Canada in October 2023 to see one of the potencial hotspots in the New Cold War. Spent 11 days and a lot of kilometers driving the region from Finland north to Vardo and the Barents. This border crossing has the potencial, like the the one to the south in Finland for Russian/FSB fun and games. Couldn't get into Russia (wanted to get to Murmansk) but got very close (5 meters) to border at a number of sites. Conversed with some dual Russians (???) which made me feel like old times (Fulda Gap, 1984). The Globus II site in Vardo is a real puzzle palace along with the Vardo Hotel which has a nice breakfast and a functioning NBC shelter in the basement. Go to the Surf & Turf in Kirkenes for an outstanding reindeer...
