The weather forecast during the day didn’t look promising, with heavy cloud coverage predicted. However, Max and our driver used their expertise, data, and judgment to find the best possible location. Their deep understanding of the aurora and the local conditions increased our chances significantly—and it paid off! We were treated to one of the most intense and breathtaking Northern Lights displays imaginable.

Our driver’s exceptional skills in handling snow and icy roads were truly impressive. He navigated safely and efficiently, ensuring we reached clear skies in time to witness nature’s most spectacular performance. The dedication to chasing the best viewing spot was commendable.

The campfire experience was a lovely touch, with vegetarian sausages (thank you for catering to my dietary needs!), hot spiced tea, and biscuits for dessert. Friday, my girlfriend and I embarked on a Northern Lights hunting expedition with Northern Horizon, and it turned out to be an experience of a lifetime. The setup was perfect; amidst the icy expanse, Bert prepared a cozy spot for us. We huddled around a warming bonfire, sipping hot chocolate and tea, which was a delightful treat in the biting cold. The addition of grilled sausages added a rustic charm to our outdoor adventure.

And then, as if on cue, the sky began to dance with vibrant hues of greenand pink. The sight of the Northern Lights unfurling across the night sky was nothing short of magical. It was a surreal moment, leaving us speechless and in complete admiration of nature's wonder.

I booked two northern lights tours for my weekend in Tromsø after reading advice that this was sensible to maximise chances of seeing the aurora borealis, and this was by far the better tour. We were lucky to have Harry as our guide and within about ten seconds of him speaking I knew I was going to have a great night. He was clearly knowledgeable, passionate about the aurora and photography and a kind person who individually greeted everyone on the tour and made sure we all had a wonderful evening. He had a lovely communication style and spent time explaining the basic science of the aurora and some of the cultural mythology surrounding it, which added to the experience. I also appreciated that he clearly explained his plans for the evening as it progressed and the rationale behind this.

We were fortunate enough to see two incredible displays of the aurora. For nearly all of us it was the first time we had seen the aurora, and this tour made it an even more magical experience. In comparison, the other tour I went on with one of the main companies advertised online felt like a slightly soulless tick the box exercise. Other pros of this tour over the other one included Arctic suits and snow boots in the minibus (so they are available whether you think you will need them or not), being conscientious about people needing to go to the bathroom and preemptively stopping for this when possible, a small seat for everyone by the campfire, reindeer/vegetarian sausages and lomper (simple but fun and Norwegian, and cooking by fire meant it was hot rather than lukewarm from a thermos). Harry also took multiple photos of everyone on the tour and was able to explain how to capture the aurora by camera or iPhone.
