We visited this place at night. It was quite cold and windy out there; however we were well protected in terms of clothes / shoes etc.
It was better after we entered the tent since they had kept the fire burning inside and covers also stopped the wind. They explained us the Sami culture partially and told us that they have reindeer farm comprising of 300+ reindeer. They explained to us about how to feed reindeer and how not to get afraid of them!
Thereafter they gave us one bucket each, full of reindeer food. After entering the farm, many reindeer started chasing the food that we were having and we thoroughly enjoyed feeding them. It was great feeling to have us surrounded by reindeer with beautiful horns.
Once we came back inside the tent, they had nice hot drinks ready for us like coffee, hot chocolate etc. We enjoyed it a lot after experiencing the windy cold weather outside.
We then had reindeer sledge ride which was yet another amazing experience. being in the sledge and watching dark sky and snow all around. We were covered with reindeer skin towel that protected us well. The staff was quite customer focused and customer oriented. After finishing the ride, they took our phones and clicked our photos.
After reaching the tents, we had nice Sami food, very tasty. We sat as close to the fire as possible! The desert was superb.
Just after finishing the food, someone from their team shouted "Northern Lights" and asked us to come out. We all went out running with excitement and were thrilled to see the northern lights. It was amazing experience. Sky becoming green in many patches. One of their team members was very proficient in doing the setting of cameras for the night photography. He set my camera and also clicked the photographs of me and my wife on the background of northern lights. He also gave me some tips to have good photos of northern lights. The experience is unbelievable and every moment was worth it. When we arrived, the sky was cloudy and hence we felt that we won't see the northern lights; however it got cleared and we got to experience the beauty of northern lights.
They explained to us the Sami culture in greater details and explained the unique features of reindeer horns. Amazing to know that the horns grow even 1 cm every day! They were patiently answering all our questions and were very informative.
We spent much more time compared to the plan; however they were very cooperative. I admire their overall hospitality, which made our experience a magnificent one.
Kudos to you guys out there. You made our night and we were thrilled while going...
Read moreI had such high hopes due to the positive reviews but left feeling really disappointed for several reasons:
• overcrowded - there were too many people, 3 big coaches full which led to not enough seats at the camp to accommodate everyone. I was standing drinking tea in the tent as there weren’t enough seats, more people came in and I felt like I was constantly in everyone’s way. I ended up stepping outside with my tea—into a snow storm—just to avoid the overwhelming situation inside. For the Sami history presentation, I was offered a spot on the edge of a bench but ultimately chose to stand, as the space was so cramped that sitting felt uncomfortable. I was not the only one standing.
•The tour guides were rude, panicked and disorganised. From the moment they met us at the bus station they were shouting instructions and running around which created a stressful environment. This shouting and running continued throughout. One tour guide shouted at a couple of customers multiple times and this led me to become anxious.
• During the Sami history presentation, I could hear tour guides knocking on the door, seemingly pressuring the presenters to hurry up. This was both disruptive and disrespectful.
• Lunch was yummy but I was only given 7 minutes to eat lunch before being told it’s my turn to sledge. Lunch was packed up once I had returned.
•Sledging itself was particularly disappointing, as it consisted of going around in a small circle. This did not align with my expectations and it felt underwhelming.
• I got flea bites from the reindeer whilst feeding them
It feels like they are more interested in money than ensuring everyone has a great time.
On a positive note the Sami people were friendly, happy to answer questions and the presentation was very informative.
I emailed Tromso Arctic Reindeer roughly a week ago with my feedback and I am yet heard back from them.
I would not recommend this tour with Tromso Arctic Reindeer, if you really want to do it I would advise to look for different...
Read moreI loved my experience with Tromsø Arctic Reindeer from start to finish! They put a very special education focus on the Sami Culture with traditional food, songs, and stories. For this tour we booked the day and night reindeer sledding! If your time allows I recommend both tours!
Why I Loved Tromsø Arctic Reindeer
The focus on the Sami Culture - you’ll meet real Sami’s who will share stories of what it’s like being raised in a Sami family. You’ll also practice signing traditional Sami songs they call “joiking”. The time you get to interact and feed the reindeer! The Reindeer are so well cared for at Tromsø Arctic Reindeer. It’s so fun to feed them! I highly recommend adding on a sled ride. You won’t go near as fast as you would on a dog sledding, but it’s nice experience to really soak in the beauty The reindeer stew you’re served is delicious! I highly recommend getting a second serving - or even thirds if you’re hungry enough!
At Tromsø Arctic Reindeer you’ll see how much care and love goes into their reindeers. The Sami herders have a beautiful relationship with their reindeer.
Both the day and night tours are great for children, but I recommend the day tour for younger children and the evening tour for couples. We were lucky and had the Northern Lights appear on our evening tour!
Don’t miss stopping by their small souvenir store at the end. This is the best place to buy something special you won’t find anywhere else! I purchased cheese slicers with reindeer antlers and wooden Guksi cups.
If you’re looking for a memorable experience in Tromsø don’t miss visiting Tromsø...
