After a failed attempt the day before, fate and some stubbornness wanted us to come across the information that there would be a local guide, senior, professor of physics and astronomy who was very, very good. No need to think any further, we made the decision right away. At the appointed time, 7 pm local time, we set off on the adventure at the VW Caravelle with Torsten, the guide, who would prove to be the most extraordinary surprise of this short visit to Tromso. The guy knows almost everything about a lot, has a very nice and informed and sustained conversation about several topics, which revealed a good company for the night that, we did not know yet, would extend until about 3 am. Arrived at the camp site, and after the bonfire, Torsten was the lead actor on that stage. This guy knows the sky, the stars, the universe, way better than I know my own house, anyway… he knows more, much more than just choosing spots to wait for Auroras Borealis. The telescope kept pointing at times to the moon, sometimes to the stars, sometimes to other planets and the endless universe that makes us feel so tiny. We found that we had, after all, the opportunity to chase the Auroras with a supersum. He is not a tourist guide, he’s a scientist who gives us a passionate lesson about the universe and the auroras. He explains the “what,” and the “why,” he knows and can read the graphs, scientific data, and interpret complex scientific information that is given by the astronomy observatory, ie… it's just not enough to go to whether's website to see if there's clouds or not! It's a lot more complex than that, and Torsten, our guide, was unbeatable in availability, explanations, company and entertainment. Already on the way back to Tromso the miracle happened. We stopped suddenly and jumped into a scenario I will never forget. Between two mountains, with the full moon illuminating the white peaks and a lake-like sea, Aurora Borealis made a point of appearing and presenting us with a magnificent spectacle. It was a dream come true, one of the first 3 wishes on my bucket list, and it was my girlfriend who offered it to me, thank you my love. We will be returning to Tromso in 4 or 5 years, when the sun is most intense, and on a new moon night and… we only have one option, the guide has...
Read moreSummary: Great, at first it seems impossible to view the polar light that day due to heavy rain, but Torsten (our Guide) managed to lead us to places where we had clear sky.
I choosed "standard chase "with 8 hours and got picket up at my hotel together with some nice girls from the states ;). After several hours of driving (with some stopps at supermarkets etc.) we finally reached an area with clear sky where we had several stops for watching and photos. We returned a little bit later than expected but with a great image of the Aurora in our mind. The driving was not that boring because you can discuss with torston about the physics of the Aurora and other stuff... i can...
