With its open landscape surrounded by mountains, Vestvågøy is like an oasis in the centre of Lofoten. This is a big farming area, and I found here lots of products from local producers. In times gone by, Vestvågøy was called Lofotr, and after a while it gave its name to the entire archipelago. For hundreds of years, the island was hiding treasures in the form of the biggest chieftain’s house to date that has been found. Every year, visitors from around the world come to the Viking Museum, which bears witness to riches and power going back to the Middle Ages. White sandy beaches and nice walks await, and elite surfers come here to Unstad to surf on one of the best surfing beaches in Europe. Vestvågøy is sparsely populated, leading to the creation of small villages and communities along the coast and further inland. There are lots of shops and nice little cafés here. I traveled from Vestvågøy to Stamsund with the Hurtigruten boats, fly to Leknes and drive on the E10. I experienced here The Head sculpture at Eggum, then visited to Ballstad, one of Lofoten’s biggest fishing villages, taken a fishing trip, after that I had been wear a wetsuit and go to scuba diving.
