So apparently just yesterday the original Rainbow Mountains were opened again. However, we really enjoyed the Palccoyo Rainbow Mountains. From Cusco it was around a 4h drive. Especially the last 2 hours were rather tough with a very rough road and lots of curves. However, it was so much worth it. The bus drove us to 4.800m and from there a rather easy (based on walking - but tough based on oxygen) hike started to see 4 different viewpoints. 3 different Rainbow Mountains and the stone Forrest on 5.000m from where you can see everything. Read moreVery beautiful and I really enjoyed visiting here. There were rainbow mountains in every direction with snow capped mountains, llamas, and beautiful red mountains too. The road up there was brutal, but the views were definitely worth it. The elevation wasn't a joke, but our tour guide gave us some lemon or flower stuff to open up our airways that really helped. We climbed up to the rock garden. I was pretty light headed up there, but the views were incredible. I wish I could have hung out up...
Read moreI selected this rainbow mountain instead of the vinicunca because I had read it was just as beautiful and less people and easier to hike. I must say I agree 100%. It was so beautiful and you can see 3 different rainbow mountains. I really enjoyed Palccoy and do not regret the decision. They are also constructing new bathrooms at the bottom of the mountain. Which you do pay the locals to use.
On another note altitude, I had a hard time breathing even though it wasn't that...
