I spent 4 days in Serra da Lousã late April while my daughter was attending a woodcarving workshop in Cerdeira, which is one of the five xisto villages in Lousã. I was totally amazed by the green mountains, the creeks and waterfalls in its valleys as well as the xisto villages. There are 7 hiking routes in Lousã, all clearly marked. They overlap one another in many places so it is important you follow your planed route, or you might end up walking 10 or more kilometers while you planned for 6km only. Some parts of these hikes can be out of way, so you will be better off if you are prepared with hiking sticks, enough water, some food supply, and raincoat, if you come in April, since the weather in the mountain is a bit whimsical. With everything considered, the view in the mountain, and the great sense of accomplishment when you reach a xisto village is completely rewarding. The xisto villages have their specific features those they may look similar. Cerdeira is home for creativity, with two artists shareholders hosting a variety of art workshops from woodcarving to clay works. Tarasnal features choices of local restaurants and bars. The hydrangeas shrubs to here are stricking too. I am sure they can be phenomenal in Summer. Candal is located right by the road so it's very convenient to approach. There is a restaurant by the road but parking was a bit difficult during weekend A creek runs through the village, giving an additional lively touch to the rustic look. I didn't spend enough time in Casal Novo or the other village, and I definitely will return to this Lousa to explore further.
