Built in the IX-X AD
It is a quadrangular fortress of earth with waves and deep ditches on three sides, typical of the c. IX-X. Fortifications in the palisade system were placed on the earth waves, with two bastions on the western side, the traces of which were visible at the end of the century. the width of the moat up to 20 m places the citadel among the largest on the territory of our country. The first archaeological excavations were carried out in 1900 by P. Cseplő and I. Karácsonyi, who also made the first description of the fortress.
The researches were continued by M. Roşka
between 1924 - 1925, then Mircea Rusu in 1954 and
continued until now by Sever Dumitrașcu. These archaeological investigations show that the citadel has been inhabited since the Neolithic era. The discovered materials represent the continuation of Dacian, Daco-Roman and Romanian habitation.
In the second half of the century X sporadic Hungarian groups enter, probably following the attack of Hungarian bands on the fortress.
