The beautiful sandy beaches are still there and will have plenty of football matches to watch. It's bit of a tourist trap with accommodation too expensive for what's generally on offer. I always loved staying at Sobo Bade but the old Haitian actor who had the original vision sadly passed a few years ago (2022) and they want $50 a night for a small dingy room - go next door or up the road as there's much better places available. I really liked Toubab Dialaw. I did not want to stay in Dakar, since I don't like being in large cities. It was also a short ride to the modern airport and right on the beach. It seemed very safe. I didn't run into any other Americans, so that was a bonus for me. There were Europeans in town. The locals were friendly and hospitable. I enjoyed the Airbnb that I stayed at.
