A Life Changing Experience at Primate Care South Africa Volunteering at the rehabilitation center for orphaned baboons was truly one of the most transformative and rewarding experiences of my life.
I learned so much about primate behavior, wildlife rehabilitation, and the challenges that baboons face in the wild. Being so close to nature working hands on with the orphaned baby baboons and seeing their progress day by day, was both humbling and inspiring. Learning how to act like a baboon, make sounds as a baboon to comfort the babies. Learning about enrichment and getting to see the baby bond with a surrogate baboon mother and joining a troop. I miss it everyday and me and my friend I traveled there with 100% want to go back!
The staff were incredibly welcoming, knowledgeable, and passionate. They made sure we understood not only the tasks, but also the deeper purpose behind everything we were doing. I felt supported and valued every step of the way.
The accommodations were comfortable, the food was great, and the center is located in a stunning part of South Africa, surrounded by the sounds and sights of the wild.
