Great historical significance of the birth of Islam in Southern Africa... This place commemorates the existence of Sheikh Yusuf of Macassar. Dutch political prisoners, exiled to the CAPE in the 1600s.: Sheikh Yusuf al-Macassari (1626-1699) was a revered Muslim scholar and Sufi from Gowa, in present-day Indonesia. He played a significant role in resisting Dutch colonial expansion in Southeast Asia. Exiled to the Cape of Good Hope by the Dutch in 1694, along with his family and followers, Sheikh Yusuf is credited with establishing the first cohesive Muslim community in South Africa. His settlement at Zandvliet (renamed Macassar in his honor) became a sanctuary for runaway slaves and a center for the propagation of Islam. The Kramat of Sheikh Yusuf is a sacred shrine located in Faure, near Macassar in Cape Town. It marks his final resting place and is considered one of the most important Muslim pilgrimage sites in the Western Cape. A "kramat" is a shrine dedicated to a holy person or Awliya (friends of Allah). The Kramat of Sheikh Yusuf not only commemorates his life and teachings but also symbolizes the early roots of Islam in South Africa. Many believe that through his presence and the establishment of his community, the first true Muslim community was formed in the country. The site is visited by people of all faiths who come to pay their respects to a man recognized for his spiritual leadership and resistance against oppression.
