Our trip made a nice family outing from Durban. Took a wrong ramp before Inchanga but made a U-turn, so suggest you check the routes. There is plenty of parking as soon as you enter on a hill and also closer down with car guards. However, found it a tight squeeze to angle car out for an exit after parking down there - cars were close behind. If you're looking for Halaal food, there's slim pickings. We only found one vendor in the morning.
The first morning train is nice because it's relatively quiet and lots of opportunity for good photos but food vendors are still setting up so it is hard to find food ready. Toilets were accessible and decent enough. There is a toilet on the train (did not try that) and a serving bar with snacks and drinks which we purchased from in the first coach.
Step ladder leads up to the train to get in as it is a bit high. However, when we stopped at Botha's Hill there were none, so some elderly were concerned how they would get back on and stayed in the train. The views were lovely but the three seater side seemed to have better views most of the time. There are two tunnels which were fun going through.
It was an amazing experience for people going on the train for the first time. In the beginning, we were not sure where to board but figured it out. Two-seaters are a squeeze if you are on the bigger side though. Sitting next to the window, we were fortunate to have a little side table to put drinks and the windows are big. Sometimes, soot and condensation got us when close to the window but it was part of the experience and there are blinds/windows to close if need be.
Overall, it was a peaceful and scenic experience that took us back in time with plenty of memorable photos and videos. Only wish we could have gone into the museum with the train models... it was closed and people were looking through the windows. Everyone was friendly and helpful, making you feel right at home. There were pony rides as well and more stalls after the train ride. The ride was long enough for us to be satisfied. Definitely...

The sights, the sounds and the smell make for an authentic steam train experience
Booking seats on the website was a little confusing at first and the site was quite slow, but these are steam trains, so a pinch of salt will do well here. In the end it was all well worth the effort.
The drivers of the steam engine were happy to let the kids climb onto the footplate for a quick photo and even shovel a bit of coal into the firebox. The journey let's you see the beautiful area around Hillcrest, way above the highway. Passing farms in the hillside, with gives you that rustic vibe that Steamers are all about.
The kids were ecstatic afterwards and couldn't stop talking about it, it made the end of our week away...
