There are braai and picnic areas next to the bird hide. You can spend a few moments of tranquility before exploring the rest of Rietvlei or you could spend a couple of hours enjoying a picnic.

Great picnic spot and braai spot in the presence of hippos by the dam. There's a hide where you're going to see the biggest catfish you've ever seen just roaming around below you having a grand time. A must visit for chill and sites.

I love to visit the dam at Rietvlei, one can braai here and have a good time, bird watching, hippo's and various other animals that arrive at the dam. I only have one issue with the dam, and it has been a issue for many years, the area at and around the edge of the dam is very un-even, I had a parent that battled to walk, they fell at the dam area, I myself have walking problems, and even I myself battle to walk here,...

This dam and the recreational area are quite well taken care of. The bathrooms are clean and well stocked with toilet paper throughout the day. There is plenty of space for families to bring their own picnic chairs blankets and baskets, as well as a few tables and braais if you want to braai your own food. Would definitely recommend a visit to this fam when you are in the Rietvlei...
