If you're in or around the KZN Midlands, you have to visit The Old Mushroom Farm near Howick.

It's an absolute treat that blends rustic charm with creative flair, and one that has shown itself to be a standout destination.

Once a working mushroom farm, it's now a vibrant artisan hub with converted growing tunnels turned into shops, cafés, and studios.

Surrounded by the scenic KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, less than 8km from the Howick CBD, it is pet-friendly and family-friendly, with plenty of space for kids to roam and explore.

It offers a range of self-catering units, from cozy cottages to stylish lofts and apartments.

It offers a unique, peaceful setting, comfy beds, and thoughtful touches like pre-lit fireplaces for that warm and welcoming feel.

Guests can harvest fresh herbs and vegetables from the gardens which is a truly thoughtful and earthly touch for any establishment.

The Home to Home Slice Café, known for delicious breakfasts, baked goods, and coffee is a must visit.

Other artisan shops include a bookstore, soap boutique, candle shop, tile shop, and spiritual space with a range of alternative products.

There is also a creative space with exhibitions, events, and workshops.

The Old Mushroom Farm is great for cycling, hiking, or just relaxing in the community garden, and all things considered, it is one of KwaZulu-Natal's true...

Wow, what a magical place. We stayed in the Falls House as we were a family group, coming from all over the country [& UK] celebrating a 90th Birthday! We wanted self catering & a large kitchen/lounge/dining area as there would be 25 of us at one point!! The place has the most beautiful views, large rooms with excellent, warm duvets for those chilly winter nights......the large fireplace indoors was a huge bonus, as was the large braai catering for all those guests. Service was excellent with Thabo on hand answering loads of questions before arrival, cleaning staff very friendly & we even arranged [at our expense] to have them come back after braaing to help clean up {Boks were playing & we needed to get into town to watch!!] Apart from that, we didn't miss the TV at all, wi-fi was good throughout the house & we brought our own music for entertainment. We wondered around the assortment of shops on site, making various purchases. A few tackled some of the walking/jogging tracks around......but mostly we just chillaxed with the stunning scenery in the background. Recommend bringing slippers as the floors are cold in winter!! Lovely time had by all. Highly recommend this place...

This was a rare and wonderful find. Everything was out of the ordinary but extraordinary. The accommodation was wonderful with everything we could possibly need and more. The unusual industrial architecture tastefully furnished with the most unusual retro finds gave it a real modern day look which made us feel we could stay longer than our 3 night booked stay. Exposed brick and piping, industrial windows, a wonderful wood burner, definitely needed and the unusual kitchen cabinets just made our two bedroomed apartment a special stay. The lovely white linen, electric blankets and very well thought out shower and toilet facilities was great. The shops, restuarants and the very special community garden available to us was a delightful discovery. Truthfully, we didnt harvest anything from there because the pizza place, bakery and coffee shop offered us so much choice already that we only braaied once. Sizwe's breakfasts are absolutely delicious and his friendly and cheerful manner made us feel right at home. This is a must experience! Make a long weekend of it, it will be worth your while. And we took our dog which...

I had the pleasure of hosting my solo exhibition, Finding Home, at &Kin, located within The Old Mushroom Farm, and it was an outstanding success. The venue itself is fantastic—spacious, contemporary, and beautifully airy, providing the perfect setting for an exhibition. The architecture is particularly interesting, blending industrial elements with rustic charm in a way that feels both modern and inviting. A special mention to Sandy, who was incredibly helpful in facilitating my time there. The location is delightfully offbeat, set in the countryside, which adds to its unique charm. Ample parking makes it convenient, and the surrounding views are simply spectacular. There is a selection of retail shops on-site, including an incredible bookstore and lovely soap and body cream shop. Nearby, Home Slice CafĂ© is an excellent spot, offering a great variety of delicious meals. Overall, The Old Mushroom Farm is a gem—an inspiring space with a vibrant creative atmosphere. Highly recommended for exhibitions, visits, and anyone looking for a refreshing artistic and cultural experience!
