Ponte San Xoan De Mourentan — Local services in Arbo

"Over the River Deva, a short distance from its mouth with the River Miño, is the San Xoán de Mourentán Bridge. The old Camino or Verea Real passed over it, linking Tui, Arbo and Ribadavia. It is an elevated bridge that takes advantage of a narrowing of the river walls. An ideal place for an ambush, as the residents of Arbo did on February 17-18th of 1809 against the French, during the War of Independence, led by the abbot of Couto, Don Mauricio Troncoso de Lira y Sotomayor, abbot of San Xurxo de Vilar de Crecente and annex of San Bartolomeu do Couto.

Although its current construction appears to be from modern times, it has a previous medieval origin. There are inscribed crosses on the arch's ribs, which used to be used to make the place sacred. Très joli lieu, calme, possibilité de se baigner. A côté du pont romain San Xoan qui enjambe la Deva (affluent du Minho), un moulin semble être en cours de restauration (dommage que l'intérieur soit comme laissé à l'abandon). De grandes tables en pierre, à l'ombre des chataîgniers, permettent de pique-niquer. Lieu historique également, car, sur ce pont aurait eu lieu une des batailles les plus sanglantes de la contrée d'Arbo entre les troupes françaises de Napoléon et les villageois d'Arbo durant la guerre d'Indépendance (1808- 1814). Les villageois menés par l'Abbé Del Couto se sont battus pour leur terre et ont fait battre en retraite les troupes napoléoniennes. Zona con historia, en 1809 hubo una batalla de 3 días contra los franceses del general Stout que intentaron pasar el puente. Hay un monolito recordando la historia. Hay un antiguo aserradero que aunque parezca más reciente, se supone que es de origen medieval. Hay una zona de mesas y mucha sombra, bañarse con mucha precaución ya que hay corriente fuerte cerca de las compuertas. Hay donde aparcar pero no demasiado sitio.
