At last we had crossed the Pyrenees and reached the Chapel of Ibaneta on the way to Saint James the Apostle. On the hill on the right of the chapel is memorial stone marking the place where Count Roland (736-778) the Warden of Breton Marches to Charlemagne or Charles the Great the King of the Franks (742-814) was killed in the battle or in the ambush prepared by local Basques. Later in XI century was created famous Chanson de Geste "The Song of Roland" where Basques were replaced by Saracens. Anyway the battlefield of the Battle of Roncevaux Pass took place here. Un lloc natural molt bonic amb un monument conmemoratiu i una ermita. Hi ha aparcament per a vehicles i és lloc d'inici de diverses rutes a peu, així com lloc de pas del camí de Sant Jaume francès i lloc d'inici del mateix camí si s'inicia des de Navarra.

Actualmente es un hito en el trazado del Camino Francés que lleva hasta Santiago de Compostela. En esta zona de San Salvador «se reunían los dos ramales que franqueaban el paso montañoso», el camino alto (por el alto de Lepoeder, de 1436 m) y el camino bajo (por el valle de Valcarlos).[1]​ Este paso de montaña está, así pues, fuertemente vinculado con Roncesvalles siendo habitual, por esta ello, que se solapen y confundan en algunas fuentes. Pero, bajo un cierto rigor, estos espacios, junto con Valcarlos, deben ser diferenciados...
