Ambewela is a small town in Nuwara Eliya district popularly known for its 2 dairy farms called “Ambewela Farm” and “New Zealand Farm”. The wide grasslands Ambewela lies 6,064 ft (1,848 m) above sea level. The maximum temperature of this area is about 23° C and the lowest goes down to about 9° C.
The Ambewela farm was started by the British in early 1940s the New Zealand farm was started in 1960 with the assistance from the New Zealand government and is also managed by the Ambewela Farm. Only the New Zealand Farm is open to visitors out of the two. This is a popular destination for visitors of Nuwara Eliya, specially for families with children.
The farms spans over 1500 acres of green pastures spreading as far as the eye can see dotted with brown/black and white cows twice the size of the average cow in Sri Lanka. Ambewela Farm and New Zealand Farm raise Ayrshire cattle and Friesian cows respectively. At one point you will pass a row of massive wind turbines lying along the horizon.
Once you come close to the visitor site you will be teleported in to a remote town of England. Not only the weather and environment looks totally alien to Sri Lanka, the little English styled cottages of the staff, meadows covered in important grass and European cows completes this transformation of the landscape to a little English town.

There is an product outlet at the entrance which you can procure the products of the farm including fresh milk. The farm is open for visitors through out the year from 9 am – 6pm and a nominal fee is charged for the entrance ticket. But if you plan to visit this farm on your next visit to Nuwara Eliya, make sure you check if the available farm is open to visitors since they close it down for months during outbreaks of diseases for the safety of visitors.
The farm lies 20 km and 45 minute drive from the Nuwara Eliya town on the route to Horton Plains. The drive is also refreshing, passing though vegetable farmland, lakes and forested areas. Another location you will pass is Kande Ela Reservoir, a must stop on this route.

Beautiful meadows in which you can see cows ! Milking the cows also can be seen,but it's done at a specific time so if you wanna see it ,better find out the proper time and go ! During rainy days it's filled with mist and it's really cold there ,so I advice you to go during a less rainy day cuz sunny days are very rare in nuwaraeliya ... there are clean washrooms there ,which you can use.
