And it is situated near to the worlds' heritage fort Sigiraya rock in Central province. The importance of the temple is in ancient times in 1st and 2nd century BC, the temple was used as a Buddhist monastery.

The temple was a main place in reign king Kashyapa. They believe that Prince Kashyapa after killed his father King Dathusena came to Sigiraya to search more safer place from his half brother Prince Mugalan. And because of arrival of Princess Kashyapa, the monks who meditated in Sigiraya were requested to move to Piduranagala tenple for this king Kashyapa refurbished the historical temple.
