I visited here because of its world unesco heritage status but was amazed by the views and learned a lot about the fossils excavated here by archaeologists. You can get here by public transport by taking train from milan to mendriso then take the hourly bus to meride. I then hike the round trip geo-paleontological trail which was amazing as well.

Here is some background: Monte San Giorgio, a pyramid-shaped mountain near Lake Lugano on the Swiss-Italian border, is renowned for its exceptional Middle Triassic fossil record, dating back approximately 240 million years. Recognized by UNESCO in 2003 (Switzerland) and extended in 2010 (Italy), it offers unparalleled insights into marine and terrestrial life...

Monte San Giorgio jednym z najbardziej znaczących stanowisk skamieniałości flory i fauny z triasu środkowego[1]. Odkryto tu m.in. szczątki ticinozucha – archozaura z rodziny Prestosuchidae i ceresiosaurusa – notozaura z rodziny Nothosauridae[1].

The primary hiking trail starts from the village of Meride, which ascends gradually, winding through dense beech and chestnut forests.

As you reach the summit, the landscape opens up, offering an unobstructed vista of the lake nestled between the mountains. On clear days, the visibility is excellent, allowing you to see far into the distance, with the deep blue of the lake contrasting beautifully with the greens of the forests and the rugged mountain terrain.

Duration: 3-4 hours round trip Difficulty: Moderate. Some...
