A good reason to take the cable car up to the Gemmipass above Leukerbad is to photograph the bearded vulture, a rare bird of prey, said to live on bone. e.g. cadavers. I drove there this late October Sunday in beautiful but ice cold weather, taking the first gondola at 09 sharp. Snow powdered the alpine chain to the south of us. There was ample parking close to the cable car station at this time of the day and we were accompanied by a group of serious Wallis birders, as judged from their 600-800 mm lenses. The overall cost of the equipment in our cable car was certainly above 150.000 Swiss francs. The mood was peaking already after an hour when the first birds showed up in the sharp morning sunlight.
