Beautiful scenery with a lovely cablecar/funiculair ride from Beatenbucht (Thunersee) up to the summit. The reason for the lower reviews is due to the restaurant/safety of the playground.
A big playground is situated right near the restaurant, though there is no fence or barrier around it. The side of the mountain is very steep and drops off about 1-2 meters from the playground equipment. Minimal effort would be needed to insert a fence to make this area worry-free for parents. The terrace also has a 50 cm drop to the gound again without a barrier; if you have toddlers, they need to be watched.
Restaurant: self-service is very convenient. Limited salad bar with prepared foods. A daily menu was available for 17.50chf, but this was not posted anywhere (a German-speaking family member had to ask the chef personally). Long waits for food-the chef was by himself. Had to wait for kids' spaghetti portion to be made (at 13h00!). Berner rösti with bacon and egg was thrown on a small plate-rösti was not handmade. A pile of British-style bacon was sitting in a pile. Two bites of vegetables were given. Overall, the food was bland and simple, and kitchen not well organized.
Nevertheless, go to Niederhorn for the views and...

Oh and one of the best walks in the Alps too!
So I’ve been coming to Interlaken for many years but never once ventured up the Niederhorn.
Whoa my loss!
The views are stupendous – the full spread of the Eiger & Monch range are seen – this has to be one of the best panoramas in the Alps.
There is a super swish restaurant at the top too.
I decided to walk to Habkern. And what a walk!
Easily drops into my top ten of Alpine walks.
For much of the route you follow the obvious ridge on a well marked path. There are fabulous views in all directions at all times – it really is supendous.
Just beware it is very exposed so I would avoid it if it is windy, there are no shortcuts until about two thirds of the way along, so for most of it you go on or go back. And there is no water or refreshment chalets on the way!
I dropped into Habkern after about 3 hours and caught the hourly bus back...
Read moreThe entire trip to get here great. If using public transportation it is a combo of trains and gondolas. In lauterbraun we walked a half mile from train to see famous view with mountains/valley/falls. Then you have to walk thru Muirren which is a car free village. This town has excellent views of mountains. You might be tempted . To stop here and save the money it costs to go up to niederhorn because the views are so good. I highly recommend continuing on. Gondolas to top stop at berg? It has a thrill walk. Google it and see pics videos. Very cool and a more then a bit scary dor those with fear of heights. They can stay sagely at restaurant at berg base station. Then gondola continues to peak. Views are incredible. We went right before closing and so saw sunset over mountains on way back...
