We met a lovely refuge host when we arrived, who allowed us to camp on the refuge’s land. (However, for future campers, beware, there are MAX. 1-2 SPOTS FOR CAMPING.) Alternatively one can stay at the refuge. It looked charming and the food delicious. An authentic refuge on a beautiful mountain trail with visibility on the surrounding glaciers.

"Le refuge des Grands est un vĂ©ritable havre de paix et de bonheur, situĂ© Ă  plus de 2000 mĂštres d'altitude. La montĂ©e jusqu'au refuge, d'une durĂ©e d'environ 2 heures, est une magnifique balade Ă  travers un paysage splendide, d'abord le long d'un biss, puis Ă  travers une forĂȘt magnifique, pour enfin atteindre la vĂ©ritable montagne. Une fois arrivĂ© au refuge, vous serez chaleureusement accueilli par Christian (bien que cela puisse varier), qui est trĂšs amical et attentionnĂ©. Il veillera Ă  ce que vous soyez bien dĂ©saltĂ©rĂ© et pourra mĂȘme vous proposer un hĂ©bergement pour la nuit. Christian saura vous conseiller parfaitement sur les sentiers Ă  emprunter et la durĂ©e de vos randonnĂ©es. Un moment inoubliable partagĂ© au refuge des Grands. Merci pour cette expĂ©rience unique !"

Came up here as we took the alternative route (which I would DEFINITELY recommend). Didn't stay the night but was able to buy drinks (VERY expensive, I think 3 euros for a coca-cola) but the views were absolutely beautiful as you are across from the glaciers

By far, hands down, our favorite refuge we stayed at on our trek. The guardians truly embodied their title -- their family has been taking care of the cabin for decades and the love they have for this magical little cabin and gorgeous spot is palpable. They were wonderful hosts and extended true generosity to us in the traditional spirit of these huts (before they got saturated and commercialized). We will never forget our wonderful stay! The first 1 km was the ONLY place with snow. All doable w out mini crampons. I used out of extreme precaution and if slipped it would not have been a problem. But I flew across. My partners got it done 1 min slower.

The refuge is...wonderful. I can go on, but it is something everyone should do if you are hiking...
