Why? - because it's on the Chiang Mai Outer Ring Road (highway 121) just before (or after) the bridge over the River Ping.
If you travel this route, it's well worth a stop to view the numerous buildings, statues, walkways and lakes. Some of it has been refurbished, some of it needs a makeover, but it all adds to the interest. You can easily spend half an hour here, and there's plenty of parking space.
A variety of fish and turtles inhabit the ponds and welcome being fed. Amongst other reviews I read that the toilets are amazing, and as I missed that, I have a good reason to stop next time I'm passing.
