Royal Thai Navy Sea Turtle Conservation Center — Local services in Chon Buri Province

Judging by the comments, it looks like getting into the Naval Sea Turtle Conserve Center as a foreign tourist is a bit of a hit and miss. Luckily, our group was on an official visit to a Thai government agency, so our hosts organised a really nice visit for us.

The Center is located in a pleasant location on a nice beach (if you don't mind the docks on one side). There's a small museum-type building with some information about the turtles and the efforts to preserve them, as well as a theatre room where visitors would be shown a short movie about the activities of the Center.

Outside there are the nursing pools with all the turtles, from the ones that are just hatched to several months old (I think the oldest we saw were around 8-10 months). The facilities looked fairly well maintained, the pools get cleaned regularly, the turtles get fed regularly and looked after by vets. There are 5 species of turtles they handle here (sorry, can't remember the names!)

At the end of our visit the staff generously allowed our group to release two turtles into the sea - this got everyone really excited! We were also offered a drinks and food reception by the sea, with excellent views of the sunset. It was a really memorable visit!

PS At first it feels a little strange to see the Royal Navy in charge or a conservation effort, but in some ways it makes a lot of sense. Poachers would probably want to avoid encounters with the military, making the turtles that much safer. There was a naval officer, very passionate about turtle conservation that provided us with lots of interesting information about these endangered sea turtles. You can come volunteer for turtle scrubbing & pool cleanup.

Hawksbill sea turtles are critically endangered species. 90% of turtles that hatched here in the gulf of Thailand will go hang out in the Philippines.. and 10% will be off to Vietnam.. They will return to lay eggs where they were first hatched.

Sea Turtles only mate in natural habitats, not in captivities.. The marines will go out to guard the turtle eggs day & night till they hatch.. and bring the babies here to raise for 5-6months to help increase their chance of survival. เพลิดเพลินได้ความรู้ พาเด็กๆเที่ยวก็เหมาะครับ ศูนย์อนุรักษ์พันธุ์เต่าทะเล กองทัพเรือ เป็นสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวเชิงอนุรักษ์ และแหล่งความรู้เกี่ยวกับเต่าทะเล ที่อยู่ในความดูแลของหน่วยบัญชาการต่อสู้อากาศยานและรักษาฝั่ง (สอ.รฝ.) อำเภอสัตหีบ ชลบุรี ซึ่งทางกองทัพเรือได้ดำเนินการอนุรักษ์เต่าทะเลมาตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ.2493 การดำเนินงานของศูนย์อนุรักษ์พันธุ์เต่าทะเล กองทัพเรือ มุ่งเน้นที่จะอนุบาลเต่าทะเล ตั้งแต่ออกจากไข่ จนโตพอที่จะปล่อยลงสู่ทะเล กลับคืนสู่ธรรมชาติ เป็นแหล่งวิจัยเต่าทะเลเพื่อเป็นข้อมูลในการอนุรักษ์ มีโรงพยาบาลเต่าทะเลเพื่อรักษาเต่าทะเลที่ได้รับการบาดเจ็บ หรือเป็นโรค และ เป็นแหล่งเผยแพร่ความรู้ให้กับผู้ที่มาเยี่ยมชม การเข้าเยี่ยมชมภายในศูนย์อนุรักษ์พันธุ์เต่าทะเล สามารถเข้าชมได้ฟรี ไม่เสียค่าใช้จ่ายใดๆ ทั้งสิ้น ภายในจะแบ่งเป็น 4 โซนดังนี้

อะควาเรี่ยมภายในอาคารแสดงเต่าทะเล เป็นบ่อเต่าขนาดเท่าสระว่ายน้ำ มีเต่าทะเลตัวใหญ่อยู่ในบ่อ สามารถเข้าชมได้อย่างใกล้ชิด มีรั้วกันตกบ่อ และ ผนังแบบกระจกทำให้สามารถมองเห็นเต่าขณะที่ว่ายอยู่ในน้ำได้ การอนุบาลลูกเต่าทะเล ภายในโรงอนุบาล ถัดจากบ่อใหญ่ก็จะเป็นโรงอนุบาลเต่า โดยมีเต่าตั้งแต่แรกเกิด ไปจนถึง 1 ปี แต่ละบ่อจะมีอายุ และ พันธุ์ไม่เหมือนกัน การอนุบาลเต่าจะทำจนเต่าแข็งแรงสามารถออกหากินเองตามธรรมชาติได้ การเข้าชมในโรงอนุบาลมีข้อห้ามอยู่อย่างหนึ่ง คือ ห้ามจับเต่า เพราะมือเราอาจมีสิ่งปนเปื้อน อาจทำให้เต่าเป็นโรค หรือ เสียชีวิตได้ ลูกเต่าแรกเกิดจนถึง อายุ 2 ปี จะมีสีคล้ำ และจะค่อยๆ ขาวขึ้นเรื่อยๆ ตามอายุ จุดพักผ่อนบริเวณชายหาด ในพื้นที่ของศูนย์อนุรักษ์พันธุ์เต่าทะเลกองทัพเรือ มีร้านค้าสมาคมภริยาทหารเรือ หาดทราย และ ท่าเรือ หาดสะอาดแต่น้ำทะเลไม่ใสเท่าไหร่ เป็นจุดพักผ่อนสำหรับนักท่องเที่ยวที่มาเยี่ยมชม ห้องแสดงนิทรรศการ ภายในอาคารบรรยายสรุป เป็นอาคารทรงกลมมีหลังคารูปเต่าทะเล ภายในมีประวัติความเป็นมาของศูนย์อนุรักษ์พันธุ์เต่าทะเลกองทัพเรือ ข้อมูลเต่าทะเลในน่านน้ำไทยว่ามีพันธุ์ไหนบ้าง และสถานการณ์เต่าทะเลในประเทศไทย สามารถเดินชมได้เอง

สำหรับนักท่องเที่ยวที่มาเป็นหมู่คณะสามารถติดต่อเข้าชมวีดีทัศน์เต่าทะเลได้กับเจ้าหน้าที่ รวมแล้วใช้เวลาชมในศูนย์อนุรักษ์พันธุ์เต่าทะเลกองทัพเรือ ประมาณเกือบ 1 ชั่วโมง ได้เห็นเต่าทะเลทั้งตัวเล็ก ตัวใหญ่ เพลิดเพลินไปกับความน่ารักของเต่า และได้ความรู้เกี่ยวกับเต่าทะเลในประเทศไทยหลายอย่าง ทั้งหมดนี้ไม่เสียค่าใช้จ่ายซักบาท ถือว่าเป็นสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวเชิงอนุรักษ์ที่ไม่ควรพลาดเมื่อมาเที่ยวสัตหีบ
