Phuket is one of the top holiday destinations in Asia for good reason. Weather is warm and pleasant year round, and there is a wide variety of activities to keep you busy from stunning beaches to scuba diving to cycling to jungle treks. Loads of nighttime entertainment, quality cinemas and shopping and an ever expanding list of child friendly activities. The list goes on.
Crime is low and after more than 15 years here I feel safer, and and have had less trouble with the crime, than I did in Canada. (Yes, Canada)
There are a lot of ways to to get in trouble also but some common sense and a minimal amount of effort to learn local customs can help you stay clear of any problems.
Spend some time learning the basics of Thai culture before you come. Honestly 30 minutes on the plane will be more than enough to get what you need. 4 days in and I have found nothing but friendly people, fantastic accommodation(s), great food all around and a level of serenity one will not find again after Phuket gets back in full swing. If you are considering going to Thailand, strange as it may sound now really...
