Read moreMy wife and I were on honeymoon in Phuket and despite loving to have an "elephant experience", we are against animal exploitation and were already convinced that it would not happen. All the places we looked for online somehow did not assuage our concerns that the animals were properly taken care of, although some call themselves sanctuaries or ethical parks. Then, the day before we left, we found The Lake which looked to be ok by our standards, so we tried to book for that day. The receptionist from our hotel told us it was full for the day, because they took only small groups. This made us more certain that The Lake not like other parks in the area. When we arrived we confirmed our suspicions: The Lake is a unique place where nothing is left to chance concerning elephant care. The whole park is beyond what we could see, with a big lake at the entrance. You are not allowed to ride on the elephants, there are no sticks, nor ear pulls, no fences. You help prepare the elephant food, and they follow you at their will. In our case we were the only ones for the day. They have 4 elephants, however 2 of them were at the hospital, leaving us with 2 lovely female elephants. After feeding them, we walked with them to the lake. The lunch was one of the best we had in Thailand, with a perfect pad thai. There are no souvenir shops, one T-shirt is included in the fee, as well as all the photos they take during the day. The guides were genuinely interested in creating awareness about the need to respect the elephants. I hope to return one day, and absolutely...
Read moreThis is such a fantastic place where you can see that the elephants are being loved and looked after with great passion and care. There are no cages or animals tied up. Itâs probably best to book one of the half or full day sessions where small groups of you will have one of the best experiences you will have with these wonderful animals. The elephants are guided around the grounds where you are able to interact with them. You are initially given a little back ground of the place and then help with food preparation. Then breakfast if lunch is served and you are able to feed the elephants and begin bonding with them. This is followed by a nice long walk with them through the large grounds of the nursery. There are plenty of opportunities to interact with them in more natural surroundings before the finale where you get to help bath them. A lovely home cooked lunch sends you home with happiness and content. The animals look very well looked after and seem very happy. The lead guide Deng is full of knowledge and love of all things, especially the elephants which is clear in the way he interacts with them. If you do one thing on the island , this is it. THIS IS A MUST and a day you will not regret or forget , you will feel that you have shared a wonderful experience and have made a small contribution in helping look after nature in a more balanced and kind way. I wish more places that have animals were managed in this way. Keep up the fantastic work and we will be back to...
