Mount Ararat, known as "Ağrı Dağı" in Turkish, is the highest peak in Turkey and a significant national and symbolic landmark. It consists of two major volcanic cones: Greater Ararat and Lesser Ararat. Greater Ararat is the tallest, reaching an elevation of approximately 5,137 meters (16,854 feet), making it the highest point in Turkey. ### Historical and Cultural Significance **Historical Importance**: Mount Ararat holds a special place in the historical and cultural landscape of the region. It is believed to be the resting place of Noah's Ark as mentioned in the Bible, the Quran, and other religious texts, which makes it a site of pilgrimage and spiritual significance for many. **Myths and Legends**: The most famous legend associated with Mount Ararat is that of Noah's Ark. According to the biblical narrative, Noah's Ark came to rest on the "mountains of Ararat" after the great flood. Although numerous expeditions have been conducted over the years to find the remains of the ark, none have produced conclusive evidence. This story has imbued the mountain with a mythical status and continues to attract explorers and the faithful. ### Geographical and Environmental Aspects **Geology**: Mount Ararat is a dormant compound volcano. Seismic activities in the region point to its volcanic nature, though it has not erupted in recorded history. **Climate and Ecosystem**: The mountain's vast size influences the local climate. Its higher altitudes are covered with snow year-round, supporting a unique alpine ecosystem. Lower elevations feature a variety of flora and fauna adapted to the harsh climatic conditions. ### Conservation and Maintenance **National Park**: Mount Ararat is part of a national park, which helps in conserving its natural environment and biodiversity. The park's status also helps manage the impact of human activities, including climbing and tourism, which are significant given the mountain's popularity. **Climbing and Access Regulations**: Climbing Mount Ararat requires a permit, and climbers must be accompanied by a licensed guide. These regulations help ensure the safety of the climbers and the preservation of the natural environment. The Turkish government actively manages these activities through various governmental bodies, emphasizing sustainable tourism and conservation efforts. **Cultural and Environmental Preservation**: Efforts are ongoing to balance the cultural significance and the ecological importance of Mount Ararat. This involves regulating tourism to prevent ecological damage and ensuring that local and religious traditions are respected. Overall, Mount Ararat is not just a mountain; it is a symbol of national pride, a beacon for explorers, and a sacred site that captures the imagination of people around the world. Its preservation is a priority for Turkey, both as a natural wonder and a cultural heritage site.

TO ALL THE MOUTAIN LOVERS : I must alert you on some aspects of this expedition. I don't have much to reproach to the company with which we left, but I must speak out about the polluting industry represented by this ascent of Mount Ararat. Indeed, we were shocked by the way nature is not respected. In places, the landscape looks like a landfill. Meals are served on single-use polystyrene plates, with plastic cutlery and bottles. In all, several dozen kilos of waste (per group!) are thrown into the wild, just a few meters from the camps, then burned, every day. The organizing teams never question the way things work. Also, the animals that carry the tourists' belongings between camps are overloaded, some of them very frightened, and we've noticed that many of them have been mutilated. As a reminder, everything we are describing is not aimed at one company in particular, but at the general operation of all the services.

The solution would not be to stop the excursions, as this climb is magnificent and well worth experiencing, but it is absolutely necessary for the various companies to behave more responsibly during the stay.

In conclusion, if you love the mountains and nature, I wouldn't recommend this expedition, which is destroying them for the sake of a tourist business. I'll leave some heartbreaking photos as a testimony. To make the mountains accessible to customers who are unaware of the cost of their destruction and who have no environmental conscience is...

(bkz.
