This place has become really worth to visit, After the renovation. Today the place is called The Sokullu Mehmet Pasha fortress. The castle was built by the Genoese during the Crusades and served under the control of the Knights Templar to ensure the route the safety of pilgrims going to Jerusalem. When Payas conquered and ruled under Ottoman Empire the caste was rebuilt by respecting to its original plan. the old bazaar and the olive tree which is over 1300 years ! Unbelievable. This location one of great historical importance in this region. Imagine the route had beed used by Alexander the Great and where he defeated Darius III of Persia in the First Battle of Issus definitely well worth a visit. There are places to eat and drink and gift shops as well I Highly recommend a visit to the castle as there is something for everyone to either learn or enjoy.

Beautiful example of a Ottoman style caravanserai (fortefied Inn for caravans) with a castle and Fort next to it. The castle was originally established by templar Knights, and in the 1500's when the region came under Ottoman control the whole complex was rebuilt from the foundations up. The complex was built near the junction where roads from Constantinople divided to continue to Iraq or south to Israel, Egypt, and to Arabia. Today the caravanserai is used as a government office and is surprisingly lively for such a historical place. The castle, unfortunately, is closed though the nearby fortress (şeytan kalesi) is open as a small cafe. The mosque, which was visited by renowned traveller Evliya Çelebi, is open.
