SAW is full of 1 stars eateries, and it’s difficult to find a 3 stars, not Michelin, I’m talking about Google reviews.
Anyway, I just want a POPYPE takeaway burger to bring to airport hotel, what can go wrong?
There is a self order panel but the card machine is broken. Therefore we screen shot the order and went to Popeye to order.
The staff there push us away and said it is not their product, it’s other eateries. So we went back and shot a full list of their products and showed them again it is POPEYE.
At this point, they can’t avoid to take our order, but they push us to buy the meal deal, which we insist ONLY ONE CHICKEN BURGER.
After waiting for a long time (luckily not one hour as in other reviews) , they gave us the burger but without the takeaway bag.
We asked for the takeaway bag. Guess what? the staff suddenly mocked us and laughing. They gave us the paper bag and suddenly take it away, repeating the act several times, like the Turkish ice cream man.
The staff in Popeye speaks ZERO English and are very rude.
I think there is a vibe in SAW eateries. We also ordered a sundae in Burger King. They give us a small size despite we paid for the larger size.
If you read the reviews you will suspect these staff are having a competition to humiliate tourists.
Then we want to buy a beer at the next shop, it asks for TL 450 (€10) for a bottle beer. The beer in Istanbul restaurants cost TL200, in supermarket TL90. It’s wonderful to restrain yourself to be alcohol free in SAW.
If you are still curious why other eateries got 1 star reviews, go to Macdonald, you will definitely have a good laugh.
After we went to the ISG hotel, there is no signage so we asked the information center. The staff there dropped words from his mouth,”go out, turn left”. When we asked him to clarify, he said “2 minutes”, as if he is talking to a begger.
Then we went out and only to find out the correct way is from the lower level. Mind you, in Turkey, you have to scan every luggage and even watches for entering each level. So we have to put all our luggage into the scan belt on the lower level again.
In lower level we finally find the ONE AND ONLY signage about ISG airport hotel, exit 2.
Guess what? When we arrive at the exit, the going up escalator is broken, only the downwards escalator is working. So we have to take all our luggage up a long flight of stairs.
When we arrived at the hotel, we see there is an easier way to go to the hotel. But there is no signage in the airport. You can only know after you had been to the hotel before.
The next day we catch our flight. No matter what, I will NEVER spend a dime or come back to SAW.
Turkey is a nice place for travel, but SAW is...
Read moreExperience in Arrival: Mostly, Pegasus Airlines are here. You have to ride for an airport bus as the terminal tubes are always busy. I love their signages - clear and have color coding to make it easy for the passengers. There are lots of immigration counters but seems that too many also tourists coming into this country. The I.O. I encountered was cool, checking every detailed and kind. It takes only less than 3 mins. Getting your luggage is easy and it will not take time. The worst wifi I have encountered at the airport... only for 30 mins. Lots of fast food chains, exchange moneys, telecoms and rentals. Good thing that there are lots mode of transportation such as metro, taxi and bus. Some of the employees at the airport are not friendly and don't smile.
Experience in Departure: Arrived via metro train that it takes 1 hr. starting from Sirkeci Marmaray Station Entrance There is an inspection before entering the premises. I arrived more than 4 hours so that I have time to buy some stuffs. BUT, the problem starts with the airport staff's as the don't give the correct or concrete answers. I asked at the entrance of departure, and they give me the wrong direction. I asked, and the staff put me in the wrong lane and place (which I line for almost an hour) The "Check-in Counter desk" - 2 out of 5 counters were working, and it takes tooooooooooooo longgggggg… and another 1 hour waiting in line. They always talk and work slow. I asked again airport staff where is the entrance for the Immigration and she gave the wrong direction until I find it myself. No problem in the Immigration area perhaps less than 2 minutes. The Duty Free is not as big as the others airport. All titled fast food chains are located on the 1st floor including eating area. Not as many available steel chairs at the gate station. I have
Conclusion: Next time better come early at the airport cause some airport staff's have...

✈️ Overview & Growth
Located on the Asian side of Istanbul in Pendik, about 32–35 km from the city center, SAW serves as the secondary international airport for Istanbul and is the main base for Pegasus Airlines and AnadoluJet
In 2024, SAW handled over 41 million passengers, a 12% increase over the previous year. In March 2025, it was the fastest‑growing major airport in Europe, with a year-over-year rise of around 9.6%
👍 What Works
Efficient Metro Access 🚇 The M4 Metro line, operational since 2022, connects directly to Kadıköy and provides a fast, affordable way to reach central Istanbul—especially convenient for travelers staying on the Anatolian side
Compact & Easy to Navigate SAW’s single terminal layout makes it simpler to navigate than the sprawling Istanbul Airport (IST). It generally involves shorter walking distances and clearer layouts—even during busier times, it feels more human-scale
👎 Common Complaints
Long Queues & Stressful Security Multiple reports highlight excessive security lines, sometimes up to 2+ hours, which led to missed flights and escalated stress—especially with families or connecting flights.
Poor Staff Attitude & Language Barriers Many travelers reported negative encounters: rude or unhelpful staff, lack of English proficiency, and disregard for passengers needing help ― especially frustrating during delays or baggage issues
Overpriced Food & Taxis Food, beverages, and duty-free items are often described as astronomically expensive (daily: €6‑12 for a bottle or snack). There are also numerous scam reports involving taxis: drivers overcharge, refuse to reset meters, or switch to “VIP” rides without consent. Many recommend pre-booked transfers or using public...
