I hiked Mount Elgon up Sipi trail and down Sasa trail in five days & four nights with a Ugandan Wildlife Authority ranger, chef, and two porters. You can expect a relaxed and comfortable pace with this number of days and support team members, which I suggest if you are in no hurry.
If this timeline suits you, you’re likely to see Blue monkeys and Columbus monkeys, which we saw in great numbers on days one and two.
If your trip is short, the faster trail is easily doable for anyone in good athletic shape.
Ramazan & the team at Mt Elgon Trekkers are professional and personable. Ramazan organizes activities with ease and treats his clients like close friends. Your trip is automatically positively enhanced if you choose Elgon Trekkers as your guide no matter what activity you choose. I highly recommend them for anyone visiting Sipi.
Make sure you budget for a generous tip to your ranger, chef and porter(s) and bring enough cash to distribute to your team at the end of the hike. I suggest 20,000-100,000 per day per support team member, depending on your personal financial situation and quality of experience. I regret that I was unable to provide a better tip, because I did not have enough cash on me and did not think ahead.
Ensure that you have adequate medication (antibiotics prescribed before departure) in case of travelers sickness via contaminated water, and take caution to administer at the first onset of symptoms, otherwise you will have a difficult return hike and miss the summit. Most hikers fare just fine but I suggest this precaution, especially to multi-day...
Read moreI booked a 5 day trekking tour of Mt. Elgon, ascending via the Piswa route and descending using the Sasa trail.
Firstly, I have to thank Ranazan for all the organisation that went into making a great experience for me, that exceeded my expectations. Secondly, the team I was with was excellent and guided me successfully through sometimes difficult terrain. The cook and the prters also did a great job.
The landscape is amazing and I would presonally recommend the Piswa trail as it is in my opinion more beautiful than the Sasa Trail although one needs a bit longer to do it. I also have to say that we did not meet a single tourist on the whole route and on many days saw no one else at all! One thing to be aware of is that the camps are not always in a very good state, the buildings b eing old or incomplete. With tents this issue can be avoided.
I can absolutely recommend to book with Elgon Mountain Trekkers and there are a lot more options on their website which look...
Read moreHad the most beautiful time hiking with Mount Elgon Trekkers. Our guide Ramazan was the sweetest. Super calm, kind, and full of knowledge. Since he’s from Sipi Falls area himself, he showed us around in the community and invited us into the local life in a really natural and respectful way. No tourists, just us in what felt like a fairytale environment :)
The Sipi Falls hike was one of the most peaceful and meaningful shorter hikes I’ve done. Around 8km, fairly easy and in the best environment with my girlfriends. It was stunning and full of soul and kind people on the way.
We also did a coffee tour the day after with Denis, who was just amazing. So passionate and sympathic, and as a farmer and coffee producer himself, he gave us such a real perspective on coffee and entrepreneurship. As business and development students, it really hit differently and the self-made coffee was honestly the best I’ve ever had (seriously!). We really got it directly from the...
