Shocking!! The last time we visited was a couple of years ago if not longer and it was a sad state of affairs then. We had hoped it would be better now but we were sadly mistaken. The burnt out ruin of the old building still greats you when you arrive, not the best start. We paid online so it cost £17.50 for 4 of us, 2 adults, a 5 years old and a 2 year old. The place was generally unclean, the 'gift shop' was pretty much empty. Outside in the 'Zoo' it was the same as years before, really tired and run down, the enclosure windows were filthy, that's like a 5 min job. The bird enclosure was closed but you're not told that on the website and then considering how small this place is, the ticket price should reflect this. The Lemur walk is nice, we did that twice but that was the highlight :( Afterwards we popped in to the cafe for lunch, again just a sad state of affairs really tired and run down. We ordered a hotdog for the kids, it was literally just a plain sad hotdog in a bun and an orange on the side, they forgot the crisps, I questioned it and honestly you would have thought I was jacking the place. My wife ordered a Mexican bean baked potato, came with baked beans on, I mean really how hard is it to get right. The latte was great though, that's about it.
The kids went to play on the play park out front, again, needs some love, parts were missing and just generally not great.
I'm sorry to give such a negative review but if you can't even get the basics right, then what the hell are you doing.
Recommendations: Dynamic pricing, reflect your prices for what is available. Sort that cafe out and the incompetent staff. So many people will come back for the cafe once they've seen the animals a few times. Clean the place and print some new damn menus off. The zoo should be exciting and welcoming, i'd have felt more welcome at alcatraz. Tidy the play park up, kids are the future I do web development, sort that god awful website out. There's loads more but I'm bored of typing now, just sort it out and maybe more people will come and...
Read moreAs other reviews mention it is a small zoo, however they have some very interesting animals and the enclosures are great, they offer good viewing points as well as hiding spots for the animals. I’m happy to pay the ticket prices so the money goes towards the animals and the zoo, and hope in future they add even more animals! Unfortunately the bird walk through was closed due to bird flu but this was for the welfare of the animals so totally understandable. The cafe was lovely with a great little seating area outside at the play park, and they have picnic tables round the animal side for people who brought their own food. What I would like to see however is a better play park for the kids as it is very basic and not much in it. The toilets were really quite unclean and need checking more often. A better selection in the gift shop would be nice. And finally I suggest perhaps putting some information on the enclosures not just about the animals in general but about the specific animals, their names, age, gender, how long they’ve been at the zoo etc so you can get to know the animals you’re actually visiting.
All in all we spent a good few hours here having a picnic, went round the animals a couple of times, kids had a play at the park. Good to see it making a come back after recent years. Onwards...
Read moreWell this was my first visit, so let's begin the review, the zoo is quite small so not a all day visit, however the staff are kind, polite, and knowledgeable, they answered all questions I had about the animals, all the animals are visible even if they are in there bed areas, there are talks and meet the animal experience for free if you are there at the right times, when we visited they got 2 snakes out to meet children and adults alike, you can get really close to the birds in the aviary. The toilets are within the gift shop and were clean at our time of visit, the gift shop was not staffed at the point of our visit and didn't have alot of anything on the shelves either, I carnt comment on the cafe that is there as we didn't use it, there is a children's outside play area but again we didn't use it, there is a distinct lack of signs on the way to the zoo so could be tricky to find for some to find, the zoo is still recovering from a fire so there are some areas of construction continuing but don't let that put you off, ticket prices are just £5 for a adult (£4.50 consession rate) I would have liked there to have been more at this little zoo, but still a great morning or afternoon out! 4/5 stars and we will visit again...
