I booked a guided tour starting at 12:30. After a 30-minute hike from the nearest bus stop (note to self: start saving for a taxi from Aviemore next time), I arrived parched and questioning my life choices—only to be greeted by the glorious sight of cold drinks at the waiting area. Instant redemption.
The tour itself was genuinely impressive. They walked us through almost every step of their whisky-making process—and I mean every step. If they'd let me, I might have tried to move in. The tasting session featured 12-, 18-, and 25-year-old whiskies, each with its own personality. The flavors were distinct, the textures outstanding, and yes—I savored every drop like a proud whisky scholar.
Since the distillery only opened in 2022, their own whisky isn’t old enough to legally call itself Scotch whisky yet. But mark my words: when it finally hits maturity in 2034, it might just take the crown as one of Scotland’s finest. I’ll be first in line—possibly with a sleeping bag.
And I must mention the lunch that followed the tour—because wow. We were treated to a glorious spread: oatcakes, herring, smoked cod and mackerel, cheeses, charcuterie—you name it. Everything hit the spot. Seriously, if you miss the tasting and the lunch, you're doing it wrong.
All in all, this tour was absolutely worth half a day—even if you’re starting out from Inverness. Just bring good shoes, a love for whisky, and maybe… a...
Read moreAfter an exhilarating round of golf at the Spey Valley Championship Golf Course in Aviemore, we had the pleasure of visiting The Cairn Distillery just outside Granton. The experience was nothing short of spectacular.
From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with the warmest of welcomes. Our tour guide, Dave, was the highlight of our visit. His 10/10 rating is well-deserved; he was not only extremely knowledgeable about the distillery’s history and the intricate process of whisky making, but also funny and helpful, making our tour both educational and entertaining.
The Cairn Distillery’s commitment to quality was evident in every aspect of the tour. The passion for whisky craftsmanship was palpable, and it was a joy to witness the care and expertise that goes into every bottle.
In the gift shop, Frankie was a gem. Her helpfulness and kindness were remarkable, ensuring we found the perfect gifts to commemorate our visit. Her assistance was the cherry on top of an already delightful day.
We left The Cairn feeling enriched by the experience and with a newfound appreciation for the art of distilling. It’s a must-visit for anyone in the area, whether you’re a whisky aficionado or simply curious about the process. A big thank you to Dave, Frankie, and the team for an...
Read moreWe had the most exhilarating experience at The Cairn. Firstly, the surroundings were breathtaking- gorgeous views of the Cairngorm mountains and undulating lower farming hills. The impressive River Spey , hosted a plethora of wild flowers and a red kite gave us an impromptu air display! Secondly, tbuilding itself was fresh, modern, clean and had the Cairn symbol threaded throughout, be it on glass doors, wooden panelling on The Gathering, the spirit still, and even projected onto the walls, very clever! Thirdly, the tour (by George) was superbly conducted. Full of historical facts, wonderful use of technology and perfectly paced. The finale of the tastings was performed in the highest room of the distillery, offering outstanding views of the Cairngorms. This allowed the full sensations of the 3 whiskies to be enjoyed - how privileged were we! Finally, the staff at The Gathering bistro were very welcoming and the coffee and tablet were wonderful. Will definitely go back to try out the cuisine. An outstanding experience, bringing a very old tradition into more...
