Wonderful gin producer at Nerabus on Islay. Just for context, whisky is my thing and gin my better-half's - not that I don't enjoy a well made tasty drop of gin. We had been to all the whisky distilleries during the week and both Lussa gin (on Jura) and Islay gin had been recommended (we grabbed some of both.) What fascinated me here was that the gorse and heather gin was available in two strengths - standard is 40 and 42% respectively, navy 'gunpowder proof' is 57%. Gorse was my wife's spirit of choice and she went for the navy strength as it's flavour profile was considerably different - being strongly sweet almond forward rather than juniper of the standard bottling. This is purely because the stronger spirit reacts with the botanicals differently (the recipe is the same) which I find very interesting. The young couple operating this enterprise were friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming and when we are next on Islay we shall return. Their advice that the Gorse Navy strength gin goes best with Fevertree Mediterranean tonic was spot on. The bottle itself is very nice. The same style as one that Cadenheads use I...

Fantastic experience today visiting Islay Gin. The owner was incredibly enthusiastic and knowledgeable - he has convinced us to give distilling gin a go (under licence!). We popped in and we were offered plenty of samples and time to chose and try neat and with various tonics. Our kids enjoyed learning about the various spices and ingredients too - they will have to wait a few more years for their first sample. Thank you for your time and we shall enjoy our bottle of Gorse :o)

PS - just as there was one negative review about opening times - if you do want to get a bottle you can find it in the shop in Bridgend just 5 minutes away so no need to be...

Never seems to be open. Tried once at 11:05 and another day at 11:20. There were other people waiting too. They don't hang about at closing time but opening seems to be less important. Pretty gutted since we went out of our way to keep returning and...
