The place is only open on a Sunday, so make sure you plan in advance. We made it part of a wider visit to the area- we walked through the woods and wetlands first, taking in the Sweettrack and such. The place itself has three separate buildings now. An archaeological recreation of a Roman dining room, a Saxon longhouse and the tin hut used by early archaeologists who worked in the area. We were met by the incredible and enthusiastic gentlemen on the entrance- lovely guy, big props to him by the way and we were given free licence to wander round. The places were well built and impressive and we certainly enjoyed our time there. They do a couple of kids activities to encourage interaction from the youngsters. All in all, a great day. Support these wonderful people, they are doing an amazing job. They are volunteers and enthusiasts who are bringing history to life and figuring out real info but putting things into action. The gentleman on the entrance was telling us how the hypocaust to seven days of continuous use to actually heat the dining room. Real history in action!

This is a must-visit for fans of history, old or young. We visited for one of the family discovery tours, which was EXCELLENT. The tickets were less than Β£20 for adult+child, and excellent value for money. Our guide shared his deep knowledge through storytelling and with a range of hands-on activities and props. The craftsmanship of the reconstructed buildings, costumes and artefacts is truly impressive, and there's clearly a very talented group of volunteers behind it all. My 9-year-old history nut had the best time ever, and I learned lots too. The centre is based next to a wildlife reserve that has great facilities with a nice cafe and an art gallery/shop too. Thanks so much for having us, we'll be back next time we're in the area!

The practical archaeology skills and lifelong knowledge of the period was very apparent from the Avalon Archaology team. My thanks goes out to Mark and the rest of the staff and volunteers.

The educational value and experiential value of hands on investigation is as valuable for the young as well as for the young at heart.

Whether it's a specific event, a learning experience or a regular public visit it will be money well spent.

I started my experience of neolithic ideas when i was young, and Avalon takes us through life in this local area, from this time onwards through multiple period creations of homes through all the periods of pre-christian communities.

With an excellent cafe on site, and easy access for and to some great cycling routes on and off-road, as well as dedicated facilities for the most ardent bird-enthusiasts it's a hub we...
