This is one of my most favourite places to visit when I am holidaying in North Wales. The car park is a reasonable size, has excellent toilets and has a regular coffee van and ice cream van. The forest provides lots of different graded and way marked walks where you might get to spot Red Squirrels. The beach is a vast mostly sandy expanse (some pebble areas mostly near the dunes). One thing that is important to note is that the walk from the car park onto the beach includes a very steep climb down a dune onto the beach... making access difficult if you have restricted mobility. I have arthritis and found it hard going and painful but well worth it as it is only a very brief section. Part of the beach is out of bounds to dogs but the dog friendly area is huge even when the tide is in. There is a tidal island which is wonderful for bird watching... watch you don't get stuck there by the incoming tide though! It is a wonderful place for...
Read moreA really unique forest/beach on the Island of a Anglesey which comprises of rows and rows of corsican pine trees which were planted back in the 1950s to help protect local villagers from the sand dunes and provide timber. As the first Welsh coastal national reserve, it's an impressive location where the sea/beach meets the forest. It'd also one the largest sand dune systems in the UK so it's well worth the visit.
Access to Ynys Llanddwyn can be found by walking along the beach but pay attention to the daily tide times. The island (technically not an island as it is attached to mainland at all but the highest tides) which is situated to the Menai Srait, is home to ruins of an ancient church, and the Twr Mawr lighthouse. It takes roughly 40mins to to get to the island from the Newborough Forest car park and the distance is roughly under 2km. Car parking isn't free but the fees are reasonable, and there are toilet facilities...
Read moreProbably the best place to visit in the busy summer season. It gets busy but you can avoid the crowds. The beach walk at low tide is a big hit and can feel like a mass migration of people at busy times, it’s best to do this in winter when it’s quiet! Don’t forget to do the woodland walks or bike rides. The routes are clearly marked, but forget the indicative times. The Corsica ride is meant to be 2 hours, it takes 35 mins if you ride at a normal speed! The same applies for the walks so don’t be deterred.
The sea is shallow and popular with kite surfers as it’s always windy, even on the hottest of day!
You now need to pay on exit by car or cash, this creates a long long traffic jam, so expect to wait 15 mins before getting out of there.
