Old Man of Storr — Local services in Skye

A beautiful hike! We came early September and arrived around 8:30. There were plenty of parking spots at the time. By the time we got back to the car park around 10:30, people were having to wait for spots to open. The hike up was kind of hard for me, it was basically all uphill for a full hour. The first 20ish minutes are honestly the hardest, it got a bit better after that. The way down is a lot easier at least! The path was super clear and the view is worth it but prepare yourself for lots of breaks. From the end of the path you have a gorgeous view, although suuuuper windy up there so be prepared. We also noticed each day on the Isle that mornings were way less windy so another good reason to do the hike first thing in the morning. Bathroom facilities here are good. Have to pay for parking. The Old Man of Storr is definitely one of the must-visit destinations on Skye. This is among the most accessible hiking spots in the north part of the island, with easy access on the main road from Portree to the south. There is plenty of parking in a small lot as well as along the road. The distance and difficulty of the hike itself is not too bad - you can reach the base of the beautiful rock formations and enjoy the views, then return to your vehicle in approximately 2-3 hours. Unfortunately, there is no "official" trail for parts of the hike, so there is significant erosion on parts of the ridge. Came to hike this in the middle of winter in February. It was a gray cloudy day. I came prepared with hiking boots, waterproof pants, jacket, bag, etc. It began raining at the lower elevations which then turned into snow when we got to the top. Once at the top, it was extremely difficult to tell which way was the trail to the parking. Thank goodness I was with someone who had been here a couple of times before. But we still tried to use Google Maps as a way down. It can get dangerous if you get too close to the edge and don’t realize it.
