I don't know where to begin with this place. It is outrageously beautiful. It's a must go if you are in Devon. Such as great price for what you get to see.
When we first arrived, we managed luckily to get a parking spot and walk down to their visitor reception/shop. The lady there was very lovely and told us where to go. We walked out, and already I knew it was going to be good as there was a beautiful lake and the path stretching off towards the woods up the hill, hiding all the mystery. We went past the cute wedding that was going on next to the lake.
We started to ascend through the woods up the hill, passing over the stream coming down and getting excited for what's to come. We saw our first waterfall and took many pictures of it and the stream that we didn't even notice the massive waterfall in front of us. It was jaw-dropping and extraordinary to witness. We sat down on a bench and just watched it for a while. That and to catch our breath as it was quite a climb. We spotted the people at the top of the waterfall and knew we had to get there, too, so we pressed on up the steep steps.
We went past the original waterfall and the secret garden. The information boards all along the walk-up were really informative and interesting to read. We also loved the part where we had to look out for fairies that were hidden along the path, with little fairy doors as well.
We came across Terrance the T rex and the fern garden, which was a really tranquil part of the journey up as it was optional, and there were only 1 other couple there. We were determined to see everything, so we did everything.
We kept climbing up and up and past the snake made out of a branch and a giant's face in the cliff side. We traversed the metal bridge over the original waterfall, which is high enough to give you vertigo, and we hadn't even made it to the top.
We found a fast rushing channel of water that ran straight through a small tunnel near the top and though that was it for the waterfall until we leapt over the channel and went round the right side of the tunnel to see a breathtaking view. We had reached the top of the waterfall. The views were stunning. We drank it all in. It felt like a real achievement and a hard earned view, which made it all the more satisfying. We took pictures we sat we kissed, and we jumped for joy. I bravely held my phone over the top of the waterfall to try and grasp the scale of just how high up we were. It was definitely a nervy moment! We met another couple up there, and we both took pictures for each other and then made our way down.
We rode that high all the way down until we discovered a massive play area. We hadn't brought our daughter, but that didn't stop us from enjoying it. We loved the zipping and the assault course, and so did all the other kids there, too.
We made it down to witness the throwing of confetti for the wedding, just top off what a magical day it had been not just for us, but everyone who had been lucky enough to go to Canoteign. We bought of course a fridge magnet and many other things from the shop like pictures and fudge.
We went to many places on our short time in Devon, but Canoteign was the best of the lot. You have to go there. Preferably on a dry day so you can see those views, and so it's not...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreLoved it. Beautiful wooded hill climb in wonderfully kept parkland. Paths wide and well maintained AND THEN the hilly bit started. A properly restored Victorian garden with steps cut into the rock in places and roots of ancient tress becoming other footholds. The whole experience was enhanced by frequent rest points, each with interesting aspects, either a view, post with a placque, a picture, information sheet or just a bench. A thoroughly enjoyable, quiet and relaxing (although breathing hard was mandatory) time and what was really lovely was that the other visitors with or without kids and dogs, were, to a person, lovely, happy, polite and also having a great time. If it's the woodland experience you want in a safe (as safe as woods can be) clean, well maintained environment (with no obvious litter) then this is a day to enjoy. The parkland /lakes were clearly popular however, after my climb I settled for a.lovely filter coffee from the coffee bar and sat in the sun in a spacious tables area. The server was really polite and positive which I find always makes the coffee good. Cafe looked spacious and airy and although I didn't use it for food, would not hesitate on my next visit. For those who want a souvenir, the shop was well stocked with items to match every budget, staffed again by helpful and polite interested staff. Finally parking was ample although I expect it could get busy. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable five hour visit that was well worth the entry cost. Will be revisiting here for sure. Thoroughly recommend it for...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWhat can I say, I certainly did not expect to see what we saw beforehand. As other reviewers have mentioned already, it's a bit of a climb to get to the top, but once there you are rewarded with a fantastic view of the surrounding area. You'll have to see for yourself, really :).
The walk towards the falls and surrounding area looks fantastic. It's clean, there are plenty of benches on the way to the top to rest if you need to. They've spiced it up a bit with 'hidden' fairies and plant based dinosaurs. This is really fun for kids - but us adults loved it as well. Along the trail are signs with information about what you're looking at, quite interesting.
The Canonteign Falls has a decent parking area and a cafe which serves great food. Really recommended to order something there, you've earned it after you're done with the tour :).
The toilets outside the cafe were spotless and smelled lovely - they keep them very clean!
There's an entry fee, as the falls are on privately owned property. I have no problem with that, but I think the entry fee is quite hefty. We were with two adults, two kids and had to pay £38. They keep the place spotless and need to maintain the property of course, but most visitors will (most likely) visit the cafe and order a drink and probably have at least something to eat. Taking that into account I figure the entry fee could be lowered.
Despite that I'm very pleased with what you can find here. I would recommend it...
