First time here today at the recommendation of a friend who didn't want to get stuck in with all the busyness of Pen Y Fan. It's literally opposite Pen and the Storey Arms building. Head towards the burger van (and park if required) and there's a wee gate behind it to start you off. Lovely and quiet, didn't see another soul the whole time we comped around. Can be a bit muddy so just look where you're going, and be careful crossing any streams. No direct path so you can freestyle, which we did. Very windy at the top so bring good clothing and a hat! Absolutely stunning views of Brecon at the top, well worth the hike. About 700m elevation I believe. Took us about an hour to get up, was my first ever mountain climb so an experienced person might do it in about 45 minutes.

Fan Fawr is a lovely mountain and easily accessible from the A470. Much quieter than Pen y Fan and Corn Du on the opposite side of the road and has a nice flat and grassy top with plenty of pitches to wild camp on. You can walk it from many directions, with a variety of ascent and steepness. From certain angles you can properly appreciate the sweep of the mountain. Highest point marked by a cairn and a trig point lower down near the far end of the gentle summit. Great views and another mountain worth ticking off.

Fan Fawr is a refreshing change from its neighbours, Corn Du and Pen y Fan. Whilst the masses climb the other mountains, there's a chance you'll have this summit to yourself. It's a pleasant climb most of the way, with a steeper incline as you near the top. You'll reach a cairn once you near the summit, then not too long after is the trig point. If you carry on walking for 5 minutes after the trig point, you'll be able to see Ystradfellte. And on a clear day, you can see the Carmarthen Fans in the distance.
