Amazing experience watching the bears waiting for the Salmon to jump upstream. We did a day trip, flying a scheduled flight from Anchorage to King Salmon Airport, followed by a float plane flight to the Naknek lake near Brook falls. National park service manage the overall experience really well. During peak season, once we arrive at the Brook falls, one needs to register our name with NPS ranger, since there is a maximum limit of 40 people on the platform closest to the falls. We had to wait about 90 minutes, which we used to watch the bears from Riffles platform slightly further away. We were really thrilled to see quite a few bears catching fish. Lastly our return flight by float plan was delayed by 20m since two sets of bears came to visit the beach, which was another great experience.

This is now one of my top parks if not #1. The shear number of bears walking everywhere in the park is unbelievable. All visitors must attend bear training as they may be seen on the beach, next to the visitors center, or any trail your hiking. Another spot to visit is the valley of 10,000 smokes after a bus ride from the Brooks Falls trail head.

Once in a life time experience watching the bears. One star is deducted because the way Katmai organizes the viewing and the lunch arrangment. Would go back in a heart beat.

Watch the live feed plus the highlights. Can’t wait to go in person as I am confident I will recognise at least 10 up to 20 bears, not including their cubs, nor the subadults who get together with other bears similar age for protection. Add the fact they are only 2 1/2 - 5 years old, they are still very playful so are more likely to be curious of other bears their size, or are just with their siblings, although like humans, like so many traits of these majestic creatures, they don’t always get along and find their own ‘friends’..

Look foreword to see the size in relation to things I’m more familiar with as on camera, they are surrounded by nature and other bears. Some stand out as huge, the male adults. But seen Female adults walk close to people and they are almost comically large.

So to see a male, a large one at that, relatively close by, would be a dream come true. Hopefully it’s not my last mixed with a nightmare as they eat their prey alive, which is troubling...
