This is a great place for all ages. I have been here on a couple different trips. Once with my family, included 2 year old. Another time I visited while at work, AFC home. Couple of warnings I will give. If you want to do more than just feed the fish in the show pond call ahead for tour times.
Notes:
Visitor Center: Clean, comfortable, informational. Restrooms are nice and have handicap/wheel chair accessibility.
Feed Pond: No stools so you have to hold small children so they can see properly. You can go out with wheel chair but will have same problem seeing as a toddler would. Bring quarters or $1 bills for fish food.
Trail: Great walk with beautiful views. NOT wheelchair friendly. Trails are loose gravel and sand mixture.
Other ponds: Beautiful views, has stools for kids to get better views. You can't reach if in a wheelchair. Simply because you have to walk trail to the ponds.
Tour: Very simple, 30 minutes, lots of information. Starts inside visitor center. Show up 5 mibutes early. Don't be late, they will not allow you to join group later. Part of tour includes extremely loud banging. So if anyone in group gets startled by loud noises, skip the tour. Tour is NOT wheelchair friendly. Also young lady that does tours does not liked to be asked same question. We went on a tour that had small children. She was rather rude to them and their parents. Said things like "If you all would actually pay attention you would know the answer." "I've already answered that." "That isn't a question about this."
So overall a good place. If you have an active or eager child stick to the ponds and skip tour. If you have handicapped or wheelchair only do...
Read moreBeen here many times. State of Michigan fish hatchery where these raise young fish of many species that are released into the lakes and rivers of michigan. So it is primarily a place of science. But there is a nice welcome center with many educational facets for all ages. Ponds and picnic areas and woods. Running and hiking trails. Great place for bird watching. Lots of migratory species pass thru in spring and fall. A large pond is stocked with steelhead trout and a few large sturgeon. With a boardwalk across it. You can feed the trout, which will jump out of the water in a frenzy . Endlessly entertaining for the youngsters who like nature.. Nice place for picnicking. No swimming or beach areas though. Woodsy and quiet most of the time. There are the occasional school field trips in...
Read moreOut of six fish hatcheries in the State of Michigan owned by the DNR, Wolf Lake is the only one to inhabit the lower part of the state. Come here when the visitor center is open and look through their gift shop, watch videos about the importance of fishing and conservation, or attend a program, all while looking at the various species of fish that dwell inside their many aquariums. You can even grab a free cup of fish food to feed the salmon, trout, and muskies that live in the show pond. If you happen to come here while the visitor center is not open, you can still hike the many trails out here, go birding, and head over to pond 10 to watch some bluegill and bass in crystal blue water from an observation deck. Wolf Lake may not get a lot of press, but this hidden gem is definitely...
