US Border Patrol Checkpoint — Local services in Alpine

If only I could rate it a ZERO. We pass though this checkpoint today on the way out of Big Bend. What a mistake. After a wonderful day hiking in the park, we were stopped here with the dog 'alerting' to either a "concealed human" or "controlled substance" in our RV. After stating I don't consent to illegal search's and especially dogs in our RV, we were pulled from our vehicles and forced into it. The sheriff also came by to basically tell us we had no rights in this 'federal' area and that we had to comply and they further harassed us.

We were held for close to 30 minutes with, surprise, nothing found, human or controlled substance. After further digging this afternoon, they tend to do this with people they just want to search whether the dog flags or not as there is no way to prove otherwise.

This being said, it has tainted our views of ever visiting Big Bend ever again and question if we give too much power to our border protection. Proceed here...

Worst border patrol checkpoint I've ever been through. Both times, I was returning from a backpacking trip in Big Bend National Park, both times with an active duty military friend, and both times the dogs "alerted" to our vehicle. Both times we were pulled from the car and the car was searched and they found nothing. No apologies. Why did the dog alert if they found nothing? They need to retrain those dogs, or consider this... they are pretending the dog alerted just so they can search anyway. My guess is the latter.

I love Big Bend, but don't want to be harassed every time I go there. I'll gladly spend my travel...

Years and years of travelling from South Texas and never had any issues at any checkpoint until I get here. Agent definitely had a napoleon complex. You know the type, small stature with a bad mustache so have to make up with a power trip. I'm sorry that our GPS took us this way and according to you it was the "long way". Know your facts first and foremost because every single path away from Big Bend was around the same amount of time back to Marfa. Nothing saved 1.5hrs according to you. Thank you for harassing my family for an extra 30 minutes so you can "run" my ID with absolutely nothing...
