There is a lot to do in this forest, fishing, hunting, boating, sightseeing, hiking, photography, 4 wheeling and more. One of the more significant attractions to this National Forest is the Mitchell Monument. This monument is dedicated to the victims of the only location in the contiguous US where Americans were killed during World War II when a Japanese balloon bomb exploded. The explosion killed Mrs. Elsie Mitchell (the wife of Reverend Archie Mitchell, Mrs. Mitchell was also pregnant at the time) and 5 of her Sunday school children. As we wound down to the bottom, I hopped out and breathed in the beautiful, fresh, crisp air as I took in the beauty that was all around. The dog went for a swim in the stream, which house some trout (according to the signs) while I stared at the beautiful rocks beyond the water, while picturing the Indians overlooking the entire place.
