Secluded but not isolated, the cabin was just what hubby and I needed to recharge our spirits and start our vacation. Just down the road from the owners, the cabin is beautifully situated on a hill above a private lake, as photos show. It is just minutes away from Highway 146, and provides good access to all the attractions in the area including the Shawnee wine trail, Trail of Tears State Park, Makanda Boardwalk, Pomona Natural Bridge, and Alto Pass Cross, and even just about a half hour away from Cape Girardeau, MO. AT&T does not work well in this entire area, it's Verizon land. There is a cell tower on the way to Cape Girardeau where AT&T will work, if you really need it. BUT, be sure to reserve at least one day for doing nothing but lounging around the cabin and grounds. Hot tub, grill, and fire pits, fishing pier, screened in back porch, all provide the setting for a step back from the fast paced stressful reality of daily life. Staples (and bait) can be picked up in Jonesboro, heading east on 146, at Casey's and Save a Lot. Breakfast can be had in Jonesboro, heading east on 146, just to the right at the roundabout. JR's opens daily at 4:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., serving hearty breakfast fare (good country ham) and sandwiches. Kelley's, next door to JR's, is open summers 6 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday (fall and winter may be Wed-Sat) has a wider selection, including breakfast burritos and great pancakes, but skip their grits. For dinners, recommend Blue Boar open daily, but kitchen closes at 7 p.m. during the week, or Brick House in Anna (east of Jonesboro) Tues-Sat 4-9 p.m. Blue Boar also has weekend brunch starting at 10:00 am. Back to the cabin--after we checked in, we were greeted by a dog (the owner's) and a cat (the neighbor's). Neither were pushy about coming indoors (and were not invited), but both appreciated a scratch behind the ears. Cabin was very comfortable in all aspects, decorated in a nature theme. House is well insulated against noises. Our first night, we noticed the outside lights come on outside outlining the hot tub and stairs down to the pier. Opened the door to the screened porch to enjoy the sight, and were greeted by the loudest chorus of nature praising the heavens that one could imagine. Wow! We were privileged to meet our host and hostess before we left, and just want to tell them once again, thank you so much for sharing this slice of heaven, hope to see you again...
Read moreMy wife and I spent our anniversary in December together enjoying the Southern Illinois Wine Trail and selected this cabin for our overnight stay. It is the perfect size which makes for a cozy feeling and has all the modern touches that we were looking for. The outdoor space is beautiful and the hot tub is completely spotless and is much better than the typical entry level models you find at most rental properties. The outdoor lighting on the steps and deck are a very nice touch. It is conveniently located 25 minutes or so from Cape Girardeau and a short drive to all of the popular local vineyards. This is a fantastic property for a great getaway for you and your significant other! Keep in mind this cabin is spotless and you can tell that the owners go to great lengths to maintain this property in tip top shape. So, as a likely returning customer we encourage others to treat this place like their own so it will be just as perfect for many...
Read moreThere aren't enough positive reviews to express how wonderful the cabin, the experience, and the owners are to those who spend a weekend or 'longer time here. Tawnya and her husband, Marc, are wonderful hosts and incredibly responsive and thoughtful. If you are a wine enthusiast, this is right on the south end of the Shawnee Wine Trail. Many wonderful wineries to visit and try. This time we visited Garden of the Gods and the nautral bridge. Rendelman's Orchard is a short drive. Make sure to visit in October when the harvest is ready. So many gourds and flowers to choose from. Cape Girardeu is a short trip away and a wonderful way to spend the day before coming back to a relaxing hot tub experience. We love visiting Katy O'Ferrel's for lunch. We have spent anniversary weekends here six times and will continue to come back again and again. You can't go wrong with Doc's...
