Went for a hike around 7pm/sunset time on July 28. (From my Apple Watch Fitness app) Clear skies with 89 degrees. We were told this was a โleisureโ hike but take it from me it wasnโt a leisure trail at all! Total distance from the Visitors Center to the top was 2.86 miles. Total time to complete the hike: 1:28:07. Elevation gained was 477 feet. The sun had set as we began our return and there was enough ambient light to get back without any issues. However darkness approached quickly and the last quarter mile was completed in almost complete darkness. Your lesson from my experience: 1. Be ready for a moderately challenging trail. 2. Take water (always). 3. Take a flashlight. 4. Leave earlier than 7pm if you donโt want to return in darkness. 5. Watch your step! The trail is very sandy and rocky with few borders.
This is a great trail and the views are...
ย ย ย Read moreThe Watchman is a fairly Easy trail (not very many people), which is about 1.5 Miles to the end on a very gradual incline. Along the way you will see unbelievable panorama's of the park. It is an Out & Back, which has a small loop at the top. It is very safe the whole way (*Tennis Shoe friendly), but there is not much shade unless you go very early. So, plan on 3-4 miles up & back and remember that you will have plenty of alone time on the loop at the top. Highly recommend for 1st timers...

Itโs fun and mildly challenging with the rocks in the path and incline overall making for a fun experience. The views are jaw dropping throughout, the majestic looking mountain range surrounding you as you hike up! We hiked in May so the contrast of the red and dry with the lush green dotted with vibrant colored flowers was truly...
