I'll try to keep this as short as possible so you may understand my experience at this facility.
Previously my career was in the automotive trade. I was certified under the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence in multiple categories in the Automobile & Light Truck Certification. Change of career now but this was added for context to show that I have insight into automotive repair.
I brought the vehicle in for diagnosis of left rear wheel area squeaking, most noticeable in reverse. I had jacked the car up and rotated the wheel forward and backwards but without torque (in reverse) the noise was not there. If I would "coast" the car backwards, the noise was there but not as noticeable as when it is in reverse.
This is something more than I can look into at home so the vehicle needed to go to the repair facility. I felt that I explained the situation in enough detail to help in finding the cause of the noise.
I received a phone call from Fifth Gear and was advised that there was some metal particles stuck/impregnated(?) into the rear brake pads and that a brake job is needed (along with other repairs that are recommended - more on that later).
Skeptical of this but thinking that there is a possibility that this could be the cause, I authorized the repair. But - the rear brakes were replaced two years ago by Fifth Gear but at the Lewisville location (approximately 25,000 miles on the brakes).
The repair was finished, I went and picked up the vehicle.
Next morning, backing out of the garage, the sound was still there. No change other than new brakes and the inconvenience for me to return the vehicle again for diagnosis.
This time, the problem was diagnosed correctly (driveshaft) and was repaired accordingly.
So how would I summarize my experience here?
First: The problem was not diagnosed correctly. I feel that after the initial repair was made, the vehicle was not checked in the manner initially described to see it the repair rectified the problem.
Second: To Fifth Gear's credit, the cost of the initial repair was applied to the price of the driveshaft replacement. Other facilities may not have done this. Thank you.
Third: Over reliance on services such as Carfax as their guide to repairs. For example: The spark plugs and ignition coils in this vehicle were recently replaced (less than 2,500 miles ago). However, Carfax doesn't show that this has been done so it is "a recommended" repair (along with cabin filter, air filter, etc).
I don't mind "Recommend Items" but earn my business first by addressing what the vehicle was brought into the facility for. There seems to be a lot of pressure for the "up-sale" for items you may really not need. This is disappointing.
In summary, will I return to this facility?
At this time, I am not sure. I feel the technician misdiagnosed the problem. Honest mistake? Maybe. But for the cost of the repair makes me want to consider other options.
Could the follow-up after the brake replacement was completed be better? Yes it could have been.
Did Fifth Gear handle the need to look at the car again professionally and perform the required repair? Yes they did.

Hereās the storyā¦
My child has only asked for ONE thing this year. A pink car. We have tried convincing her of 56378 other things but sheās stuck to this one thing. So, I did a ton of research and found a car that would be big enough to last her a few years.
Black Friday I made the big purchase from Amazon and we hid the large box in my parentās garage in Northlake. So, yesterday, I took the day off work to go to my childās Christmas Party at school and decided to head over that morning to see if I could put the car together since we only have a few more days before Christmas!
I get everything out and the very first step is to insert the rear axle to attach the back wheels. Problem is, the rear axle has a 45* bend on one side and doesnāt want to go in. I start frantically looking up YouTube videos of other people building these cars and they all have straight axles! Why is mine bent?!
I jump on Amazon, contact seller, fill out the form. Look for any similar car to be shipped if I canāt build the one I have, nothing on Amazon can be delivered before Christmas! Call Amazon and talk to a really nice guy that confirms nothing can get to me soon but he will try to get me a replacement part by January š¬.
This is when my Dad may have felt my panic from inside the house and comes out to the garage. He suggests I may call some auto places nearby and see if they have a tool to bend the steele bar straight. Itās my only hope! So I start calling, 3 different shops were very kind but couldnāt help⦠until I called Fifth Gear!
Ashton Wyatt, the Service Advisor, picks up the phone and says he may be able to help but would need to see the axle. So I rush up there and he is SO kind! He says they can try to quickly bend it cold but it may likely break so he would rather have some time to heat it up and bend it properly, in between the other ACTUAL cars theyāre working on for the day! He asked if I could give them a few hours and I tell them OF COURSE!
He calls a few hours later and says not only is the rod straight but that they even touched up the paint and itās dry and ready for pick up!!! When we went to pick it up they REFUSED any sort of payment to thank them for their time and service! They said they were just grateful they could help save Christmas!!! And they did just that! ššš¼ā¤ļøš
Seriously yāall, if you have any automotive needs that Fifth Gear in Argyle can service, I would HIGHLY recommend checking them out! Itās obvious that they have hearts of GOLD and are in the business of helping people! Iām SO very grateful and I know you will be too if...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMy wife took our truck in a while back. She asked a ton of questions but never really got answers. The AC was not working in it. It is an older truck and from the start we told them that we understood that there were issues with it but we were just trying to get through the brutal part of summer with AC. We mentioned that we didnāt have a huge budget for the issue.
They had the truck for a few days doing their ādiagnosticā. This included taking pictures of serval things and pointing out a laundry list full of issues with the truck.
They came back to us with a quoted price of over $4k to replace the whole AC system. Not really explaining what was wrong with it, but instead trying to sell us on that being the fix for it.
They also came back to us with another $4k worth of work that needed to be done to the truck. Again not telling us what the issues were but instead trying to sell us on the specific services. I also want to point out that half of the things they pointed out were replaced a little over a year ago. They also didnāt mention anything about the glaring issue with the transmission. It slips when braking. Weāve know about it for a while but they didnāt say anything about it. Makes me wonder what they went through with their ādiagnosticā
Well last week i finally had the time to look in to the AC myself. After a few googles, youtube videos, and calls to trusted friends I decided to order and replace the compressor clutch. A part that costs a little over $100. Took about 30 minutes to replace and now we have AC. The old clutch had rubber missing and was the obvious issue with why the AC was not working.
Iām left with these questions:
What do they even try to diagnose?
Did they even test the AC? Or run through any troubleshooting on it before telling us the whole system needed to be replaced?
Why does it cost $4k to replace the whole AC system? Lowest quote we got for the same thing was $1500 and the regular was about $2500 for parts and labor. That just doesnāt seem to add up there.
Why does it feel like we went to a used car salesman and not a mechanic?
Last but not least why did we spend $200 for them to try selling us $8k in parts and labor on a truck that is worth $12k on itās best day?
Iām curious if i was the one that had brought the truck in if they would have given us more reasons on what the issues actually were. Instead my wife feels as if she got the female runaround that most mechanics do nowadays.
I believe the person that we communicated with and worked with up there was...
