My 2 years experience at OCC was great, and led me to my path at the University of Michigan. Faculty is generous, facilities (all campuses) are substantial, and the student body are a great group of people overall. I have only had a few bad experiences with the university, and that's why I'm giving it a 4/5. One experience was too personal to get into; I would have to involve staff member(s) name(s), which I would rather not do. I will, however, gladly talk about my terrible experience at the counselor offices or whatever the name is at the Auburn Hills campus. So it was the day before Christmas break and all the staff members of this specific office were obviously in a rush to hurry home like the rest of us. Unluckily for me, OCC had this obnoxious rule were if you take OVER 16 credits in a semester then you have to meet with a counselor to lift the maximum (I wanted to take 19). Anyways, this day happened to be packed with students (no surprise on a day like this), and I happened to be one of the last people there. I patiently waited and they kept telling me, "Sorry you're the cut off, there is no way we can allow you to make an appointment with a counselor". MIND YOU, ANYONE READING THIS, IT LITERALLY TAKES 1-2 MINUTES TO LIFT THE MAXIMUM CREDIT LINE, I HAD EXPLAINED THIS TO THE STAFF MEMBERS (WHO DID NOT CARE ABOUT ME) AND THEY REFUSED TO ALLOW ME. So anyways, I still waited just in case to see if there would be time left...So anyways the offices closed at either 5 or 6 i cant remember, but I was the LAST STUDENT LEFT AND THERE WAS 20 MINUTES REMAINING. So I kindly asked the lady since there are no students left, "Can I please see the counselor for 1-2 minutes, it wont take long Ive done this before". The lady refused to allow me to see the counselor and threatened my uncle and I that she would call security if we didn't leave. The situation was horrible because I needed 19 credits to be able to apply to U of M and at the time I was extremely worried for 2 weeks because I could not choose the class I needed because the credit maximum wasn't lifted, and that was the last day the counseling office would be open until 2 weeks . Under terrible circumstances I could have EASILY gotten screwed over and that class could've gotten full and I would not be attending Umich in the fall. I wish I remembered the names of the specific staff who impolitely threatened to call security on me when I was just trying to make a 1 minute appointment with a counselor with 20 MINUTES REMAINING. Think about it this way, the staff literally almost ruined my life, U of M is going to change my academic life forever...These lazy, impolite staff members almost took that away from me. I should complain to the dean or someone of higher power about the situation. I still am considering, but this was a few months ago and I should...

However, this review is for the EMS program. Stephens needs to be fired ASAP if he hasn’t already. That guy doesn’t belong anywhere near a classroom. Everything was always one sided. It’s amazing how he can have a borderline PTSD meltdown in the middle of a class, act completely out of line and very unprofessional, and then somehow our class ends up taking all of the blame for it. When he was the one who already showed up to our class with an attitude. Coming in and taking your problems out on a bunch of high school students, that’s really tough right there. Then there were rumors of possible repercussions if we went to the dean if he got OUR version of what had happened. And because he’s still complaining about our class and again, telling everything one sided…here’s my response with this review. Lead by example. Ever heard of it? Teaching a bunch of Paramedic info in a Basic EMT class, and then testing us with questions that weren’t even out of the book that we were learning. More than a 50% failure rate for each class, that’s something to be really proud of. “I’m always the bad guy because I’m trying to change the laziness of this industry!” Nope, more like Stephens just doesn’t play well with others. And always passes blame off to everyone else. Repeatedly saying “None of you deserve your licenses!!” Really? Talk about unprofessional. The EMS program is clearly unorganized and there needs to be some major changes. Oh, and maybe our favorite individual should stop showing up to class high every time. To half of the other instructors who were fantastic, I thank you. But everything else…definitely...
Read moreIf you are African American stay far away from this campus. The faculty, students that attend and the staff are racist. They have perfected the art of covert prejudice. They assume that everyone of color lives in the City of Detroit. The teachers imply that you somehow cannot do they work and they do not expect much out of you because you are black. While I am not one to scream prejudice they make it obvious that you are not wanted at the campus. Campus security if there is a dispute between an African American student and a Caucasian student they automatically assume that the Caucasian student is the injured party. I have even had to walk through the gym to get to my class and encountered an Auburn Hills Police officer in there and he looked at me as if I was something stuck to the bottom of his shoe. While the campus is very beautiful sadly the Jim Crow attitudes of much of the faculty and student body makes the campus appear cold and ugly. While I have encountered some really great instructors they are however few and far in between. I should not have to prove my worth. I should be allowed the same freedom as every other student to come to school for instruction without feeling like the campus will be sterilized when I leave. I will not attend this campus again. I will not attend any Oakland Community...
