Barrington Hills Riding Center is a perfect place to go riding. As a riding center and a forest preserve trailhead, you can access to the expansive Spring Lake Forest Preserve and get the unique experience of exploring nature on your horse. Barrington Hills Riding Center parking, stalls, and riding areas are maintained by the Barrington Hills Park District and not the Forest Preserves of Cook County. Past the trailhead however, the forest preserve is maintained by the county. For those who don't ride horses, you are welcome to use the riding center parking as a trailhead but remember to be prepared to share the trail with horses, the trails will be wide, and you might find a stray horse poo here and there. If you are willing to make those compromises you can explore the unique Illinois Nature Preserve known as the Spring Lake Nature Preserve which is protected by the state of Illinois by law. Because the riding center greatly limits access to the northern Spring Lake Nature Preserve, and the northern Spring Lake Forest Preserve does have thick walls of invasive brush, I am giving a 4 star rating.
